We’re still in our single spreader rig. May I ask how you lost your mast? I’ve had all the chai plates off recently and crack tested them but I’m not happy with the lowers. I’m probably going to beef them up in line with Camomile’s suggestion. Blue water preparation

Our inner forestay is in exactly the same place as yours at deck level and also tied to the chainlocker bulkhead. I think I over engineered the fitting I had made. It’s a bit heavy duty....

like Camomile, I’ve found a crack in our stem head fitting so that’s coming off and being replaced...
Hello John, I hope you are sitting comfortably :)
Loss of mast? She had a rather hard life with 4 years in the Westerly Sailing School followed by a long trip via Suez to Thailand where I bought her ... found out later that between Sri Lanka and Phuket the stbd lower turnbuckle had exploded and they were lucky not to lose the rig. I bought her in Thailand ... 3 weeks later mast fell down between Sunda and Fremantle in about 10 knots of breeze... 700 miles from nearest land.
That was the port lower T'ball ... you could see that it had only 10% of fresh metal left... had been going for a long time...
Next issue... nose in at Tauranga Bridge Marina about to leave for Chile... neighbour is a french Conway.... 'Do you know there is crack in your stem head fitting?'
Fixed that with a gusset ... a bit like what one does in hatch corners on ships , DH Comet windows, etc, ... still good
A few years down the track... having read Camomile's blog... replaced all the 'staples' while in BA.

2013/14ish replaced all standing rigging in Puerto Montt... back to NZ.... working to windward Tonga to NZ... big bang ... bloody scary... stbd lower staple hanging by a thread..... see pics...

Replaced all staples in NZ with ones 2mm greater diameter.... lots more meat...

Sorted 'baby stay lifting the deck' issues in similar manner to Camomile...

Sailed back to Chile... found broken strands in lowers where they entered the swages... lowers had only 14,000 miles on them.

2016.... Cropped lowers , sorted by putting slug in mast and converting to tangs.... kit purchased from the 'Rig Shop' in either Soton or Fareham.....

Thats about it....

Frank, that photo is intriguing; you seem moored perilously close to the shore Scandi-style and what on earth is that weed you're fishing for?
:)

Hello Dom,
Setting up a '3 line plus kedge off the stbd quarter' tie off at Caleta Maxwell about two or three hours sailing from Cabo de Hornos....
The green stuff is why you don't trust your anchor... and the rule down there is 'make the land your friend' :)

Thats not even close to being close....

This is close....

Last shot is what I call 'Slocum's Notch'... its where he spent his time in Puerto Angosto

Did my treadmaster in NZ in 2015..... well worth the money..

Now, I wonder...

Having read the 'Camomile' blog and being aware of what happened to 'Brilliance' I realise I am not alone with my Sealord trials and tribulations ...

... Do other classes of yachts of similar vintage have the same issues with their rigs?
