Sorry! I misunderstood. The GPS Plotter incorperates it. I wasn't reading the thread in order of posts. I totally understand now! Especially after reading Twister Kens post!!!!!
Young lady walks through the forest, sees a little man sitting on a toadstool with clasing is head between his knees, Says the maid in aconcerned tone "little man, have you a sore head!" . Replies the little chap "nah, I'm a goblin".
Thanks. I agree with everything you have just posted! I know I'm not ready for it and 1. I'll restrict myself to fine weather sailing. 2. Probably get a skipper for a week or so to practice my close quarter manuovering.
Damn Moody for ceasing manufacture. I'd got a plan, one which I felt was the right speed of ascent for me and my family. Now that's gone out the window. One thing I can tell you is everyday since I left the show on Sunday I've question the sensibility in ordering now. I'm totally aware of the risks and although I may appear somwhat aloof on here. I'm all too aware of the danger the sea, the boat and myself pose to my family.
I'd never criticise anyone for pointing out my sailing inadequacies. (an analogy would be that I haven't even learnt my clutch control yet and I'm buying a Ferrari!)
I just wanted to state for the record that I'm not fool hardy and I'm humbled in the company of experienced sailors, even if it doesn't come across in my posts.
Thanks for your post and I'll go get our copy of The times!
Not a gambling man myself, but I'd wager a case of beer that though Moody says it is discontinuing the 38, they's announce a 381 or similar soon, probably at LBS.
It must be one of their biggest sellers. They'd be mad to quit that niche.
Agree with you re the 64, if those damned lottery numbers come up, Catherine and I want one of those... equipped with all the electrical toys you can imagine!
She also wants a crew of strapping bare chested young men for the thing - I am sure Pauline can understand her reasoning, but I put my foot down at that.
Steve
i think i have read most of this thread but you need more fenders. Exytra ones are always usefyul you can give them to the kids to dangle over the side if you foul up a manouevre ( this will happen) plus they can go swimming on their own plus you have a long boat so four each side minimum IMHO
have you got a shore power lead on there too? damn i am forgetting the list now
oh and also get a fender board, useful if you dry out against a harbour ( which i am sure your boat can do) Plus you want a search light hand held you may not plan to do any night sailing but it may happen and you may need to pick up a mooring in the dark.
a hand held air horn not so much for fog but for signalling.
I would also have at least 2 spare winch handles
get some cushions for the cock pit nice big thick ones for when you are at the helm.
I would have speakers for the cockpit. they are brill fr music when on your own at anchor and also useful for the VHF
finally the missus should so some courses at very least nav theory day skipper and know how to use the vhf.
on a personal note the only thing i have my doubts about is the dinghy. I think it will be a pain in the ass. How often are you going to be at anchor where you need to get ashore if you start weekend sailing? It will be in the way trying to get on the boat and get stuff on the boat. just a thought anyway.
oh and if you do nothing else
get an ice maker ;-)
You shouldn't feel pressured into buying just because Muddys are stop making the thing.
By the time you're ready (in experience and ambition terms) for a 38, you can bet your life that a) somebody will be making a better 38 than the Muddy, and b) that there will be one or two very well sorted and lightly used M38s on the market.
BTW - if the M38 is the sort of boat you want, have a good look at the Beneteau Oceanis 411 and 42cc. Although my fans will no doubt heap scorn on my head for suggesting them, to my mind these are two of the most sorted of the current crop of mid-range euroyots. They are close relations, and I can vouch for the fact that the 411 sails very nicely for a caravan, and is a doddle to handle under power in tight spots.
Steve instead of an extension speaker in the cockpit just fit a waterproof vhf and have done with it OR get one of the radios from standard or theicom502 and you can then fit an extension mic in the cockpit totally waterproof and all the controls are on it except DSC, i notice you used the word gotten in your mail spent a lot of time in the US?.........radio info is good, dunnit myself.......keith
Steve, having read all the posts about your intended new boat buy, I suggest that IF you buy all the intended suggestions together, it might be quicker and easier to buy a slightly bigger boat. May I suggets the M.V "Carnival Princess" this has lots of advantages.
1) It includes all the suggested additions as standard
2) Comes complete with not only crew but galley slaves as well (big plus point with SWMBO)
3) Has 3 swimming pools, 2 jacusies and 2 hairdressers (another big plus with SWMBO)
4) Has 1500 en-suite cabins to offset running costs (big plus point with bank manager)
5)Because of your size, almost certainly you will be "stand-on" vessel in any area of the Solent
6) Jet skiers/yacht racers/Sunsail Charter boats and all ybw
members will give you a wide berth
6) Has 240v mains supply without conection to shore supply as standard (big plus with SWMBO and kids) AND you dont have to pay MDL charges.
7) Has aircon throughout
8) Has 5 bars (big plus for you, but dont' tell SWMBO)
9) Has lifting gear to be able to "dry/day race" a 60 footer
10) Has Clay Pigeon shooting gear aboard which can easily be used to ward off unwanted Solent ybw members that think they are stand-on vessel.
All-in-all I think this has some merit. The only downside would have to be, that MDL don't have a mooring big enough for you, but-what-the-hell!!!!!!!
best of luck with the new purchase. I hope it brings you much pleasure
Peter
