My much loved and much-travelled Sony SW7600 seems to have bitten the dust, with a power problem.

I am now looking for a digital radio of similar quality and toughness, with multiple bands, and with improved input and output sockets for desktop and smartphone interfacing.

Lots around on Amazon, some at very high prices and from undemocratic sources; some cheapy cheapy ones too.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=portable+radio&i=electronics&s=price-desc-rank&page=4&crid=NVUBQAKKZGPS&qid=1690800177&sprefix=portable+radio,electronics,97&ref=sr_pg_4

Usage is mainly as travel source of information / music etc, while on the boat, car, hotel.

Advice please

TIA

I have one of those ... but its the original FULL bandwidth version ... many especially sold in France etc. had 'clipped' bandwidth ....

I also note that you have a slightly different curved button setup lower down ..

Brilliant radio. Bought it when I was on the ships for personal use .... still have mains power supply and the felt cover it came with.

TBH - I cannot remember last time I used it. I should get it out of the drawer and see if it still works ...

On board - I now use the multi function digital radios supplied for cars .... cheap as chips .... SD card .. USB .... Bluetooth ..... FM ......

..........

We too have one - we looked after it - still works a dream. We carry it on the yacht (just in case), and elsewhere, but at sea use an ICOM M800 - which offers the ability to both receive and send. Our complaint is that our Sony uses AA batteries and we never bought the mains transformer. Cannot complain about the ICOM, it has worked well for 40 years + and offers ability to receive all weather forecast inshore and blue water, communicate with other yachts (similarly equipped) and International marine safety nets.

Get the appropriate licenses + kit for SSB, you will need 2 (licenses), and you will enjoy so much more.

Sony did a later model that was also of similar spec but possibly had better fine tuning. I have used one for data modes since I left the sea in the mid 70's . They are heavy on batteries but have a socket for power

Check out below on Ebay.

I’ve got a Sony 7600 but it has the same capacitor fault that A LOT of these great Sony short wave radios of the 80s suffer from. There’s a few guys on eBay that do a capacitor replacement service for Sony radios of this era, but sadly the capacitors for my 7600 are no longer available. So if you have an old Sony digital shortwave radio that’s still working, think yourselves lucky.

A good replacement to look out for secondhand (not made anymore) would be an Eton E5, also badged as Grundig G5. Would be a bit of an upgrade as it also has SSB and a line out facility to interface with a laptop.

I also used to have that Sony but now have a XHDATA D808. Have a look on You Tube for loads of reviews.

Sadly the BBC have shut down a load of SW World Service transmitters as they say internet radio is the way forward.

Have a look at SDR too (software defined radio).

I would assume you require SSB reception, which your Amazon search hasn't specified.

Shortwave Portable Radios - Nevada Radio

The one reservation expressed by the SWLing Post blog about the Tecsun 501X is that it doesn't enjoy the wider AM bandwidth option of the PL-880, which "still holds the audio fidelity award" of current models. I'm sure the PL-660 used to be significantly cheaper than the 880, and wouldn't bother with it at the prices listed.
