Red diesel fight lost!

LIBS in January will be interesting.

I for one was looking to 'Upgrade' to a twin diesel from my single petrol & fuel cost was a VERY BIG factor in deciding that we could afford to do so.
Unfortunately this really has pi..ed on the fire, the second hand market has lost a keen buyer, I think I will stick for a while, now where did I put that LPG conversion?

Talking of which 'BIO DIESEL' could be the saviour or indeed LPG, time will tell. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

First 've been on the forum for a couple of weeks. Really saddened to hear the bad news. I am stuffed like the rest of us. My elderly (but very nice) Fairline with 2 x 306 Volvos is getting very close to going beyond my reach as far as running costs go. Even if I do carry on, the value for money makes it almost impossible to justify. I could afford to pay £100 for a bag of crisps, but I wouldn't as it's not value for money. Digressing for a minute, please forgive me as feel a need to rant. I am a fairly laid back character, law abiding and all of that, but recently when looking at things and in particular the interference of the state in everything I do, I am actually starting to get a feeling of anger about how much I am getting it stuffed into me from this government every way I turn. Maybe others feel the same. As the owner of a small business and having to continuously put up with all the grief that the government put on us every other day for ever more tax, the PC brigade, H&E, employment legislation, green payments for this and green that, threats of fines or jail if I don't do this or that, compliance with this, compliance for that and so on. I am getting seriously close to quitting and trying to find a country with regime that actually respects the people that try their hardest to create a decent life for themselves and their family. This country is geared up for the people that can't be arsed and it's people like us that are footing the bill. I happen to deal with the public sector on occassions and the money that is thrown away is beyond belief. Howsabout a couple of examples for all to ponder. I offered an item of equipment to a public body who are a senior authority that tells us all how to run our affairs, who I know very well. I know for a fact it was perfect for the for them and would cost about £40k. What did they do? They spent £220k on "a toy" that they will never use properley and is totally innappropriate for them. Why? It was easier to get through the system and saved them hassle. Here's another. To keep the neds happy and to try and stop them torching their neighbours buildings on Guy Fawkes night, they needed a distraction. The "solution" was to spend £60k of our money on a fireworks display to keep the wee ars*&*&s happy. Lastly, what about his one? Governmet body sets up an event to tell people to eat properley and to stop eating burgers and eat vegatables instead. Cost to us - £20k! Result - nobody (not one) person turned up. That's where our blooming money is going and why they need to keep fleecing us for more. The scary thing is that my examples will be petty cash in the grand scheme of things, so what the heck is the real wastage over the whole of the UK. Surely there has got to be another country out there that can give us a better life, now my only bit of weekend pleasure, which I make a lot of sacrifices for is being shoved up my arxx by his tonyness. Can't even fly to get away now without further lining his pockets. Somethings got to give - it's getting unbelievable. I don't even have a decent pension to look forward to now that they have screwed that for us. Add endowments to that as well. The only thing left seems to be the significant increase in the value of my house, which is at least gives something to look forward to when we downsize. Have heard rumbling that Darth Gordon is looking at ways of taxing us on the profits on our houses as well so that might not even be something to look forward to.
Sorry for the rant fellow forumites but I am really hacked off about this. Last straw and all that. At least folks in the South East have some options to consider i.e. europe mainland, but for us in the top left hand side of Europe i.e. west of Scotland, what the heck do we do? We're in the middle of the best criusing grounds anywhere and can't even go out to see them anymore. There won't be any fuel available in many of the normal crusing areas regardless of the price. All the ports are fishing ports selling red diesel to fishermen and now we can't use them. Although there are a few marinas dotted about, it will mean that realistically cruising will be drastically curtailed -even if you can afford the fuel. It's a bad day I am afraid. Thanks for reading my rant! I am away to think of another way to explore the great outdoors. Camping? That's a thought. Is there tax on tents?

[/ why should French, Italian, Spanish and German boaters have to pay it as they have done for years, and why should we be made an exception! ote]

Cos we are the exception, if it weren't for the little ships at Dunkirk, i.e. people like us there would be no Europe!!! That's why it was given in the first place.

The politicians are a bunch of, you know what, lying lazy [--word removed--] like two Jags. But, not to worry, they reap what they sow. Just watch what happens to them and their poor families! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

I am sorry to have been so blunt but you have already written this in the public domain -

The first question is how the Government will react. The Commission only specifies a minimum rate of tax, which is considerably lower than the rate charged on petrol and diesel in the UK. Unfortunately, it is very unlikely that a new band will be created specifically for marine users, so it's likely the duty will rise from the current 7.69p per litre to 48.35p per litre.

What we don't know is.......when

which says to me you are fully accepting full duty and the only question is when it's implemented........

what have I miss construed?

bluntly if you were seeing me Monday I would have had hard copy of all your public statements delivered to me prior to the meeting and I would really appreciate your understanding my issues like this.............

now I understand that you may have been misrepresented in the thoughts currently on the site, in the haste of getting comment out fast, and look forard to a fuller view replacing it?

I put this on an other post, but thought maybe this one would be better.

Here is what i have been told, don't know if its right or wrong.

There will be NO such thing as RED Diesel, ALL Diesel will be White. RED will not legally exist anywhere in the UK.
Anyone using Diesel for a living, EG, Farmers, Trawlers, Charter skippers, Haulage etc etc, will be credited with whatever the extra cost's they need to pay once the change over takes place. Hence, there will be no need for such businesses to increase their fee's

All old Red tanks will need cleaning or new tanks fitted before a licence is given to retail Diesel.

Get caught in the future with RED and you pay the penalties.

As i said, don't know if any of the above is true or false

lpg will be next, they are already starting to creep duty up on it, three times more of an increase than went on other fuel, strange that the government feel the need to increase duty by that amount on a more environently friendly fuel.

or is it ....

I'm very disappointed by this. People like me who boat inland on a tight budget will be hard hit. Many of the boats on the river are older models with a value of maybe £6000 to £20,000. The people who own these boats are already being forced to pay higher river licences and now twice as much for diesel. I think it will be very quiet on the river next year.

Surely the esiest route is to increase the duty on Red? This requires no legislation change, no infrastucture change and will not hit the commercial operations as hard as they will only be claiming back a smaller % of additional costs.

If it goes up, I will make sure that I only ever use my boat when I charter it from the management co. (however, I reckon I'll get a good rate - probably only have to pay for the fuel!)

Eh? What's the source on this?

I can understand all Diesel being subject to the same level of Tax - but if Red doesn't exist ... then how can you get caught in the future with Red?

My tank has always had Red in it ... if the Government want this cleaned then they can pay to have it removed and cleaned or replaced ... once they've done this then they can penalise me if they find red in my tank again ....

It will take a long time for the Red to naturally go from my tank - we only use just over 1 tank a season ... so it'll be years before it all goes unless it is removed other than by engine use.

Its little more than a nice club for failed UK politicians

[/ QUOTE ]Now that I agree with 100%. It's also a good place for a party leader to send a potential future leadership contenter out to pasture.

The EU is all Hitlers fault when you analyse the sequence of events, but wasn't he the by product of the 1919 versailles treaty, which was largely caused by infighting in the Saxe-Coburg Gotha family, germans I beleive who ruled the British empire as well as Germany and Prussia (changed their name to Windsor). See it's all in the family, you can't blame the EU /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
