Recent Pan-Pan.

My interpretation is that the original Pan Pan call, being an all station broadcast, might be excluded, the subsequent transmissions between the vessel in distress and those directly assisting them would not be. So disclosing the way this call was resolved and the identity of those attending would be in breach of the legislation.

I only raised the point because I'm not a particular fan of threads that seek to question someones actions when the OP isn't in full possession of the facts. It's speculating as someone else's expense and that's not attractive.

Correct-I was not in possesion of all the facts, only those heard on channel 16.

IIRC I said that I mused what I would have done in a similar situation.

If that is construed as critisism, or speculating at someones expense, so be it.

Also, the boat calling for assistance, and the boat attending were not directly identified in the OP. I agree it would not have been difficult to find the identities.

The poster who hove to in the wallet and refitted a clevis pin furnished the type of " I did it this way " practical advice I hoped might be forthcoming.

I certainly did not expect a bollocking............................

Broken shroud / chainplate in good weather - tack immediately to take the tension off, then use the spinnaker halliard or lower the main and use that halliard, around under the spreaders if necessary, to support the rig.

And yes this has happened to me, offshore but in light winds - a crystaline fracture of a chainplate U bolt.

No problem in good weather but if bad I agree a radio call is a good idea especially if there's a crew relying on one.

I don't particularly like the way the skipper and boat can be easily identified either, we all get hot and bothered now and again so it would have been best not to say the type of boat.

There is little these days that is entirely safe from the thought police.

Actually mate as far as I am aware you are still pretty much at liberty to think whatever you want to, it's just we do have some rules that say you shouldn't plaster it all over the internet. Some of those rules are based on good manners, others on specific legislation. Reminding someone of that is hardly policing their thoughts is it?

On a more positive note it's looking like a great weekend to go sailing, I will just pop out and check my rigging first though......

There were two Mayday calls to Split Coastguard yesterday as we were coming across from Solta to Hvar.

The first was a lady calling Mayday because they were taking on water and were concerned they might be sinking. The lady appeared to be British and on a charter boat. After a few minutes conversation, of which I could only hear parts of the young ladies responses, it became clear that the Mayday was something like someone had spotted some drips of water coming from the stern gland so, indeed, they were sinking .... but it was going to take around a 1000 years, assuming that they stayed out at sea all that time.

The Coastguard was not at all impressed and gave her a stern tutorial about what Mayday was actually for and that if they had any complaints about their boat they should ring the charter company on their mobile phone. Suddenly he said "Now please get off this channel (it was on 21) because there is a real distress call coming in and we need to deal with it.

He then started talking to another lady, again apparently British, on another boat on channel 21. This time was could hardly hear any of the distress callers problems and after a few minutes the Radio Officer suggested switching to mobile phone anyway.

I can't recall hearing any distress calls in 10 years in Croatia and here were two, or at least one, on a beautiful calm sunny Summer's day.
