I need a good ratchet crimping tool. Would appreciate suggestions from those more knowledgeable as to what to get at a reasonable price. This is for occasional use on the boat.

Thanks for any replies.

Depends how much you want to pay really? I got a set of cable crimpers from my local Denmans Electrical store similar to these

You can pay a £10 or up to about £50 depends on your budget?

I also got one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/300651707466?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

which I did all my 50mm2 crimps with when I did my starter circuits good value at the time @ £48

I presume you mean for small crimps. Over the years I have done a substantial amount of additional wiring with a modestly-priced crimper - probably about the £15-£20 mark - and it is still working fine, so for your 'occasional' use I cannot see a good reason to buy a more expensive one.

It needs to match the crimps you will use.
And the crimp must be right for the wire size.
A lot of DIY crimping is very unreliable.
The ratchet action is to ensure a calibrated compression of a given crimp around a given wire.
If you change the wire or crimp, the ratchet becomes a bit irrelevant.
A simple tool with well made jaws, given adequate pressure can be just as good.
Or not, operator skill helps!
It's worth doing a few test pieces and checking the wires are held strongly.

I have to admit to having one like this http://www.halfords.com/motoring/garage-equipment/tool-kits/halfords-wire-crimping-kit . It's not ideal, the wire stripping is next to useless so I have to use a Stanley knife and my teeth, the wire cutter is a joke also but for the price, it is what it is and I've done a lot of crimps with it.
I'd love a proper ratchet one but can't justify the price. Perhaps Santa will come to my aid!
Better halves are always saying that men are difficult to buy presents for but I can always think of dozens of tools I would like.

The important thing with crimping and crimping tools is not so much a question of absolute quality though that is important, the correct tool matched to the correct crimp tool is a major consideration, as for the crimps themselves IMHO unless you are able to inspect the quality of the finished crimp you have no idea how good it is, it may pass a pull test but that is not all there is to a good long lasting crimp, for me this excludes pre insulated terminals and I always use open barrel with separate sleeves. For anything from 0.5mm2 to 6mm2 a single tool is all that is needed, open barrel terminals are available in all configurations from tiny spades through rings and Japanese bullets at realistic prices.
