I don't particularly like the government that we're stuck with, but I can't help feeling that surely it's right for them to decide on policy based on their fear of losing votes?

Too many times I hear people say that the government is only doing such and such in an attempt to win votes, and wonder why they say this as though it is a criticism.

Surely in a democracy, the whole point is to try and appeal to the majority and do what they feel voters want. For years "Old Labour" spouted it's socialist cobblers and wondered why they couldn't get into power, so "New Labour" went all voter friendly and suddenly appear unassailable. And in return they get critcised for dumping Old Labour values. What use are viewpoints and policies in a democracy if no-one wants them?

A political party in a democracy is a product that has to be sold like anything else, and therefore market research into what the buyers may want and how they might react to change is basic common sense.

The majority of our politicians, of whatever party, are ill educated underachievers who wouldn't survive in the private sector. I'd much rather they at least attempt to guage public opinion, no mater how badly, before making policy, rather than just try and foist their own power hungry, self righteous views on the rest of us.

Ah. But the point is, they only pretend to give us what we want and hide the over taxing left wing, own agenda thing under cover till they think they have us by the short and curlies. Then they pounce, pretending of course that we are going to get a better health service or less accidents on our roads. It is quite peculiar how OUR roads and OUR hostpitals get reduced to COUNCILS roads, towns etc. What happend to OUR country that the PUBLIC SERVANTS were looking after for us???

Hi

I think the problem is is that they set the policies they want trying to sell it to us that its what we want.

I think that running a democracy is very different to trying to run a 'popocracy' (probably not a real word!) surely a democracy is the right for people to decide who should govern them not a government that decides policy on what they think will be popular and keep them in power. I think they can be very much mutually exclusive (especially in the country at the moment)

I agree with you on the fact that politics and policies have to be sold but again i think there is a feeling brewing that this government( and probably all that would be in power) don't sell their polcies but their policies are a sell out- for cheap popularity.

all IMVHO and to be honest i dont follow politics that closely to me it sits firmly on the fringe of things occasionally rearing its head to annoy people, much the same as an old drunk relative might at a christmas get together.
