I don't particularly like the government that we're stuck with, but I can't help feeling that surely it's right for them to decide on policy based on their fear of losing votes?
Too many times I hear people say that the government is only doing such and such in an attempt to win votes, and wonder why they say this as though it is a criticism.
Surely in a democracy, the whole point is to try and appeal to the majority and do what they feel voters want. For years "Old Labour" spouted it's socialist cobblers and wondered why they couldn't get into power, so "New Labour" went all voter friendly and suddenly appear unassailable. And in return they get critcised for dumping Old Labour values. What use are viewpoints and policies in a democracy if no-one wants them?
A political party in a democracy is a product that has to be sold like anything else, and therefore market research into what the buyers may want and how they might react to change is basic common sense.
The majority of our politicians, of whatever party, are ill educated underachievers who wouldn't survive in the private sector. I'd much rather they at least attempt to guage public opinion, no mater how badly, before making policy, rather than just try and foist their own power hungry, self righteous views on the rest of us.
