Hi

So the government have virtually come out and said that they will not be banning smoking outright in pubs and public places unlike Ireland, however they will be pressurising chocolate manufacturers to stop producing king size chocolate!

Passive smoking affects me, having somebody eating a chocolate bar any size near me has no affect, Ive carried out numerous tests weighing myself before and after sitting next to somebody eating king size chocolate- absolutely no weight change or cholestoral increase. People who want big chocolate bars can choose to do so without annoying anybody when smokers light up no one else gets a choice. Then theres the whole fast food where mcdonalds are getting set upon for producing s***e food again affects no body other than the person who CHOOSES to eat it. This 'nanny state' literally leaves me with an image of Tony Blair as mary poppins snatching away the childrens mars bars and handing them a couple of fags.

Now its not so much the specific cases above but the whole two faced, vote catching, revenue thieving that the government has behind all its policies!!

Hmmm, as a smoker I always ask if I can light up. I live with a reformed smoker and its hell.......I need a fag!

BUT and its a big one. How much duty is there on a packet of fags compared to a kingsize choccy bar?

Agree completely ..and this drive on food is ridiculously uneducated and misinformed. I've got an 11 yo diabetic daughter with anorexic tendencies that this uninformed and misdirected nutritional drive is seriously not helping.

Liked the statement on the radio the other day, by lady MP

allowing 24 hour pub opening will allow us to control closing time, and stop them all closing at the same time.

It was in relationship to binge drinking and anti-social behavior.

I gave up the weed 3 yrs ago (i could murder one right now) but I don;t have an issue with people smoking, if every body stopped over night I would have to sell the boat ,as my tax would go through the roof, and i wouldn't be able to afford it!!!

The smoking ban in Ireland has been the most extraordinary, amazing success. I don't think anyone thought it would really work. Even the majority of smokers are for it and the morning after coming back from the pub, your clothes don't reek of stale smoke.

The government reckon that the revenue they lose on ciggie duty will more than be made up for in future years by a reduction in cancer related cases in the health service.

By the way, the economy is flying here. A mile down the road someone is spending 11,000,000 euros on doing up an old mansion and a couple of miles further on, someone is building a new house at a reputed cost of 26,000,000! (Mind you, it has an underground swimming pool the size of the house.) And every second or third person you meet here seems to be buying a second house in France, Spain, Bulgaria or wherever.

Duty lost made up by NHS savings ? According to the disaster "experts" we can`t afford pentions or costs of OAP`s so if smoking was made compulsory i would solve all the forthcoming financial problems - more duty, less pensions and less NHS spending ( as we will all die at 55 )

But don't the bars smell different now. They used to have a friendly old smoky smell. Now they smell of farting and body odour.
I preferred it as it was.

I too am a smoker, of cigars that is. And after a meal recently in a Chinese restaurant in Bowness I felt guilty about lighting up. So out of courtesy I asked the couple on the closest table if they minded. To my astonishment they said they did and would I mind if I waited until they had finished there main course.
Last bloody time I ask!!!!!! /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Calm down its only an advert,Sorry wrong post.....

If you got rid of that drafty uncomfortable pocket rocket of yourn, you could get a decent proper boat with a nice set of patio doors and then go boating all year round, instead of going all hormoanal and ranting away for 6 months of the year on here .
You know it makes sense./forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

That's the reason why smoking's not going to be banned.
You are invited to come on my boat any time you want for a fag.

They've got rights too !!

Why destroy some else's pleasure at eating a meal?

P.S. I used to smoke cigars too.

On the flip side. Ifits a "smoking" restaurant and they don't like people smoking then surely they shouldn't go. I often go out with clients who don't smoke. If we go to eat and the place is non smoking then I don't smoke. Surely it applies both ways. If its a smoking place and they don't like it they shouldn't go.

Not being pedantic here, I would love to give up, but surely a smoker has as much right to smoke in a place that allows it as he/she would not to smoke in a non smoking place......if you get my drift. And I don't want to hear that 'ol nugget about breathing unhealthy fumes. Go for a walk in any town and see how many carcogens you breathe in! And the particulates for that matter, which is the real cause of breathing disorders.

Re: smoking restaurants

hm this will be intresting if blair tries one of his rubbish compromises. At the moment, frexample, laws are going thru that ban smoking with dogs. But no problem hunting lions, tigers, or bears. Or even getting a pack of foxes and ripping into a chicken, that's okay too.

Smoking-wise i wd imagine that smoking resturants will serve smoked salmon, Pouilly Fumé, smoked er other things and make it mandatory to have a ciggie in between every course, plus a few before and after. Whcih wd probably make me stop, mind you there agin cough har-ough! ghhhh! just a moment ...

Hi

Not sure about your last staement, surely thats like saying that living in a town is like smoking 20 fags a day so I may aswell smoke aswell! I dont follow that logic

Must stress that I wasnt particularly picking on smoking I was picking on the misjudged policies of a rather ignorant government making ilogical decisions e.g banning big chocolate bars but scared of losing votes and revenue by not banning fags in pubs etc

oldgit - I think your spot on there!
