Apart from providing a bad weather bolthole/fuel stop/overnight passage break, has Ramsgate anything else to offer?

I've seen what others have said about Ramsgate Week but this is a one-off. And the quality of the fish and chips is noted. But is there any other reason why we would want to spend 48/72 hours there?

What are the other attractions of the port/town?

Ii've been there twice. Good last minute cheap shopping for hols elsewhere. Everything is always on sale. good meeting place before you set ov for zomewhere else. Great chinese takeawway, where youcan sit in with the tramps, they have no winne list, but the chef usually has a bottle in the fridge he is wiling to sell you,... dirt cheap and goodish. Great printer, who managed to get large numbers printed and laminated for our boat last minute before we headed off to Holland. Ummm entertainment?....well good long run up cliff and back again... pubs, nicer restaurants, full of boaty types of course.... oyherwise, forget it.....sorry

Good professionally run sensibly priced Marina, loads of Restaurants, massive street market on a Friday, close to continental ports, excellent repair facilities, great Yacht club, close to shops, (ain't seen the Hookers but I will accept others words for that), only drawback you can't take your dog there but they are trying to change that rule.

I've used Ramsgate on occasions either as a bolt hole or a stopover, and also frequently in the past as a ferry port. I've always found it a rather pleasant atmosphere: nothing exciting but pleasant, particularly as a first British landfall after crossing from le continent. Agree that marina is very efficient; have also passed through on much bigger boats and found the harbourmaster very accommodating.

Recommend yacht club and fish & chips otherwise seems full of hookers, one-parent families and dss layabouts (same amount of dole as London etc but money goes much further there). Don't know where you can cruise from there for a day's outing. France is v. close.

Oh man the Hookers! wow , the last time I was in Ramsgate there was me and this, erm, ahem...... (whoops).

There are a couple of very lively pubs right on the edge of the harbour, these tend to get packed with the noisey sorts mentioned earlier and are often kept an eye on by a transit full of Mr Plod, especially when there is a football match on.
there are some nice restaurants a little further up the slope but no fresh fish or sea food places. Don't know why.
you'll find some quieter places a little further in land, only a short walk off the main harbour area, even a bingo hall if thats what lifts your skirt.
Not too much there to occupy anyone for longer than a couple of days I would'nt have thought.
Have a look at www.ramsgatemarina.co.uk it gives you a pretty good idea of what there is to do in and around Ramsgate.
cheers

Sowwy Syd, the big Bingo hall is gone I am sad to say, that area is being redeveloped. Pity because on a stormy night it was a fun night out with a chance at winning some dosh. The Casino is there but as I am a Gamblaholic I cannot go in there. Loads of fish restuarants selling locally caught stuff. Best Greek restuarants outside of North London. Dunno where this Hooker stuff is coming from I can honestly say I have never seen one, maybe the hide when they see me.

Thanks for the advice, boys and girls. On balance the Ayes to the Right seem to have it and thus we will plan to spend a couple of nights there this year.

Hmmmm....I wonder if you can get a 'bus to Canterbury from Ramsgate?

Yes! you can get a bus the Canterbury and the train too.
Still wondering about the Hooker, wonder if it was Dave S in one of his shirts and wearing heavy make-up. ;-)

Spent two summers at Ramsgate, pleasant town that can get a little rough around the edges. Plenty of decent pubs and restaurants, 24hr access possible.
The river Stour leading in land from Pegwell Bay is a good trip. There is a pub with moorings at the top of the navigation, and the town of Sandwich on the way, also with moorings.
Entrance to Ramsgate Harbour does get rough even when surrounding sea is OK and a couple of times we were hemmed in with our 25ft boat which was frustrating.
For those from outside Kent there is plenty to do within an hours drive from the port.
