Rain X works well for me on the boat, but on the car it was like watching star wars, the screen was covered in sparkling lights.

I use the product regularly and have done for many years, if fact the fitted wipers have been removed as they are merely an ornament and no longer used.
To get the best out of the product, clean and dry the windscreen thoroughly, then apply the product, buff off, then do it all again. I only do the forward facing windscreen.
Do this before each cruise when you are heading out to sea passage-making and highly likely to be effected by wind driven spray, applied properly, it is really effective in repelling water off the screen.

It's glass, apparently you need to check with manufacturer before using on Perspex, some/most don't like it.

When I wash down the boat after a good salt spray soaking, I never use detergent on the windscreen (there is no salt there anyway) to erode the Rainex layers.

thanks Andie that is what I thought - mine is Perspex so I am better not using it. Works great in the car though.

Yep - I've been using it for years - works so well you don't need the wipers.
In fact, recently, I've been using a different product from A Glaze
Crystal Vision
See here http://www.marineaglaze.com/shop/exterior-cleaning-products/hull-deck/crystal-vision.php
Probably nothing special in the formulation but I tend to buy it when I buy the A Glaze for the season.
One bottle of this Crystal Vision lasts me about 2 seasons
Certainly does the job - sea water over the windows just runs off in beads.

I use battery top up water as it is very clean / pure (no water marks once evaporated) with just a few drops of rain x washer additive to provide slip.

On the glass I use a product called Nanolex which has a very high contact angle and offers very good durability, the higher the contact angle the easier the beads run off.

As with any application preparation is the key, literally.

Important - Do not use products of this nature without gloves, glasses and a decent mask, unless of course you want hydrophobic fingers and lungs.

+1 and I also use it in the showers works a treat :encouragement:

Just had my boat A-Glazed Plus very pleased with the finish result - Will compare with others who have had GTechniq applied this season in Haslar Marina

I bought some Greased Lightning showroom shine and it came in a twin pack with their glass cleaner.

The showroom shine is good on the boat grp, as well as car paintwork. I do wash the muck off first. If anything it is better on the boat than the car . It makes light work of removing any streaks or other dirty marks. And it produces a good shine.

And the glass cleaner works , as per the advertising, on glass. I can't say it makes wipers (on the car) redundant but the wipers run smoother over the glass and they clear the screen more effectively.

Just a satisfied customer. I might try the rain x next time.

It's not that difficult to obtain a hydrophobic state on glass, many products offer this.
What separates the wheat from the chaff is durability, how long it can maintain that hydrophobic state before another application is needed.
Heat, salt spray, UV, aviation fuel all play a part in breaking down the hydrophobic state created.

It is safe to say however if you haven't tried the likes of A-Glazes crystal vision, rain-x or Nanolex you are missing out.

It looks as if the early promises of releasing 'super' hydrophobic products (a contact angle of over 150°) onto the market is not going to happen anytime soon, they will just increase the contact angle slowly to all the big players.
Rain x is roughly 110°, Crystal vision around 120° and Nanolex 135° according to each technical dept. Each should last well over a year.

As with any surface, the condition prior to application is far more important than the product itself.

What you can do you young whippersnappers, wot we did eons ago whilst racing motorbikes with 'Stadium Mark 1 Goggles, like what Biggles wore, is to cut a potato in alf and smudge it on yer visor/ windscreen/ goggles and it will stop 'misting' not as good as Rain X etc etc but not far behind- I sold all that stuff when I was motorbike dealer/ competitor a while back
I was chattiing to a World Champion (motor bike one) tother day about vision etc, He Said---'I wasn't bothered, they were always behind me' The Git!

Yeah mate, always knew about the old potato juice theory, have never tried it though.

Btw thanks again for the run and instruction of how to tackle the Swellies last week, I can now say I've been through with the guru :)

Cheers K
