How will changing your name help your finances? Are you going to walk into the bank and say "The name's Jimi, hand over the loot"? Can you do a credible Scottish accent? signed -Puzzled of Devon /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I had a patient once who was cheated by an employee. He went to court and had a summons served on this person, who told the Court Officer 'No, that isn't my name. I have changed it to....'.
So the Officer went away and changed the name on the warrant, only to be met with the same response. I am not sure how accurately I have remembered this, but seemingly you can call yourself whatever you like. Wouldn't suggest anyone try it these days, though. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well i think we should all change our names and then have a great big huge competition to match all the new names to the old ones.

It is my understanding that the written form of your name needs some form of official approval to be changed, thus a bit of a problem. However, there is nothing to stop you insisting that the name is pronounced in a specific way. Thus written form " smith" phonetic pronunciation "brown" would appear to be acceptable! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Under UK law you may choose to be known by any name you wish, so long as it is not done with a view to fraud.

So if Wee Jimi wants to boost his earning he cannot run "The Albert Hall" orchestra, unless that is his given name at birth and he is hiding the truth from us!!

Where the confusion arises is where there is a need to formalise that change of name, ie informing your bank, the passport office, DSS etc. etc., then you will need "A statutory declaration as to change of name" this is sworn before an appropriate person and then sent off to satisfy the bureaucrats!

I assure you don is short for Adonis!!
