Picked up Solent coastguard on the Orwell this morning, requesting “ that mariners conduct radio checks with the NCI on ch65” might be old news for Solent people though?

They have been suggesting this for some time. The NCI should be the go-to people for a radio check but those who have it ingrained in them to call on 16 still dont change.
I find the NCI like a chat and are very pleasant to deal with.
Since arriving in Ireland we have only heard two calls to the Coastguard for radio check in 3 months.

We certainly do as well as Harbour Entrance conditions and confirming your AIS is working!

The Sea Safety Group operate up there. Stations – The Sea Safety Group
No connection with NCI whatever but do the same things

They have been doing that for over a year. A brilliant solution to the problem. NCI are fantastic in providing all sorts of info.
A marina radio check is OK, but you really need some distance between transmitter and receiver.

Nope it is only national to England. A bit like the National Trust and the National Trust for Scotland, YHA and SYHA etc. etc

I remember a Round the Island race, before the start. 1300 yachts milling around, most requesting radio checks.

But why do you think they do it? I can't fathom it out.
Perhaps it's a Solent tradition, like cricket matches on the Bramble Bank, or dancing on the tables at the Folly Inn.
