I have just bought one of these and in the clear plastic bowl there is a red plastic ring loose. It is in the photo of the filter so I presume it should be there, but what is it for?

On some filters, it's to keep the cartridge centered in the middle while mounting it.

Pretty sure it's not that. Filter is a snug fit in the housing, And the ring is about 30mm in diameter. It's also in the bowl which would require removing the bowl and breaking the seal.

If there is water in the bowl, the ring floats on the water layer. Quite practical when using white diesel.
That sounds logical, cheers.
How's the quality of it?
Seen them a lot on eBay but I'm suspicious of knock offs.
Quality looks good, Castings look good and machined surfaces smooth and the hose tails came with dowty washers instead of copper.

It's a float, shows water level. If any...you can just about see mine in the pic, sunk in diesel.

(Edit, yes I have since painted that bit of bare plywood before anyone gets triggered)

The knock-offs are better, they have a plastic ring to indicate water!
To answer seriously.. I put in a new engine recently and used a copy, from ASAP I think, it is excellent quality.

I fitted the Chinese copy, after 18 months the bowl has a lot of stress cracks, I have taken the whole unit off.
My Genuine Racor bowls developed stress cracks after 30 years. the one closest to the engine room fan had far more than the one in the center of the engineroom.,

I got mine today and was wondering the same thing - thanks for confirming my guess that they are floats. I removed mine. Also removed the casting flash on the plastic turbine with some 500 grit sanding paper, and put generous amounts of grease on the stainless bolts which hold bowl & filter together, so they won't seize in the alloy housing. Over all, quality seems ok - in fact considering the cost (£50 for the pair) I think it's pretty great!

The ones I have used are made by Rongsun Headman in China. We used this firm to supply the oil filters used in AC systems on (all) the Virgin Pendolino trains (London to Manchester / Glasgow). The quality of the principal product is excellent, but they let them selves down with minor detail items sometimes.

I would have no hesitation to use them, and will be buying their elements for the Racor 900 filters on my new boat.
