I suppose I have escaped any major costs, but this year has seen the need for :

1/ Tri-annual lift out, polish and anti-foul.

2/ All encompassing service to both engines and through-hull fittings

3/ The dreaded BSS test.

4/ And the usual insurance, moorings and river-tax.

Wouldn't like this every year, and all credit to Roy at Bisham Abbey for his careful and thorough inspection, I'm sure he had our safety at the top of his list, and the guys at Thames Marine who did a decent job at the agreed price, and I'm certainly not complaining, despite the initial thread overtones, but it's our most expensive year yet!

However. Reckoning around £5K all in, this still isn't bad value compared to a Tropical fortnight, or a few budget weekends at European cities (In our experience £1K a throw if you include Parking and Kennels) and if you consider the fact one could use the Boat 'To death' for very little more (Under a gallon an hour)

True, all you get is a 60 mile stretch each way (Although we could moor elsewhere, admitted) but the quality of people one meets via BCC and the surrounding area is outstanding, whatever the age group, and the scenery which changes with each season, despite the crappy weather, is World class stuff.

So, I would like to propose a toast to Boating, the lovely characters, and to all the great folk that make this forum what it is, and to wish you all a happy remainder of 2010!

Normal abuse will be resumed as soon as I'm sober..... :)

Hear Hear !!

I have just compound polished the sides / stern of our new boat today , and will be antifouling it tomorrow .

Hope to see some of you on the river later this year / next year . I won't be using it much over the winter as the river can get a bit wild in the Teddington Weirstream ( where it lives ) and it only has a 9.9 four stroke on it.

ROFL!!!

Should I text Mrs No Regrets to tell her about the good deal on Estee Lauder cosmetics that Mrs Ramage got in Macys?

Or even the fact that iPads start at $499 in the Apple store here?

On the positive side it was 106 degrees F here today... It is still over 80 degrees F now at 7.40 pm.

And I wish we had a branch of West Marine on the River Thames, such good stuff at good cheap prices!

Thank you for cheering me up this morning. You have made our year look positively cheap despite servicing the engine and outdrive, antifouling and polishing early on in the year. Cheers:D

Cheap ??

Boating never has been cheap - I guess if we discussed the annual cost, plus repairs, fuel etc with non-boat type folk we would be regarded as complete nutters !
But how do you quantify the great summer days and evenings - yes and the times being caught out (wind agin tide etc.) and also the pleasure when a good piece of boat handling comes off OK - not forgetting the sheer pride of ownership.
I've been a boat owner for so many years now the thought of packing it in because of 'lack of value' doen't come into the equation - its just part of my life.

I have had this conversation with my father, who now understands, and non-boaty friends or colleagues, who sometimes don't.

Wihtout going too much into numbers and bearing in mind that television and football interest me not the slightest so I'm not making sacrifices along those lines.

"Popular Culture"
Football matches: £50 per week if you don't go to all of them, including fuel to get to away games.
Satellite TV with big subscription: £50 per month
Cheap lager to fit the above lifestyle: £15 per week.
Rounds out at £300 per month.
Two weeks on the Costa for parents and three sprogs, £2k or so.
I'm taking the mick and stereotyping a bit, but not that much.

"Skint Boater"
Mooring, insurance and licence and loan interest are in that sort of ballpark, not taking into account fuel to go anywhere or the £2k Costa.
£2k gets you a lot of comfortable long weekends on the River or slightly fewer of them and a longer trip to the salty stuff.

Dad sort of inderstands now. Mum didn't used to until she spent a warm and sunny afternoon on the bridge sunpad with some chilled Gran Vina Sol and then afternoon tea at Hampton Court:-)

=== so about £5600 a year??

===Mooring £3000-4000 (mine $4500 ouch!)
===Insuranc £400
===License £700
===Fuel £400-800 (just spent $400 on EastCoast trip)

Comes to about £6400 but still have the Satellite Telly on top too but for go the rest!

Add in the Liftout/In every couple years - never less than a £1000 a pop, so you could add average £500 per year.

Add in the maintenance as the old girl is 32 years old....difficult one but has to be anything between £300-£1000 depending on how much goes wrong..

I make that over £7K which is about what it costs me.....

Just out of interest, does anyone know what typical annual running costs of a Villa in Spain would be??

Just been working out our annual running costs and they dont seem too bad:

Mooring - £1000
Licence - £260
Insurance - £200
Fuel - £750 (based on last years usage of 300 hours)
Servicing - £350

Lift out, chock ashore and stern drive service every two years - £750 so £375 per year
Lift and hold - £100 every second spring so £50 per year

General maintenance - depends what goes wrong but say £500 for a ball park figure

So annual running cost of approx. £3485 or £290 per month or £67 per week.

As I said before, really quite comparable with the go to football match/drink lager etc alternative. Of course, if you do both you are a rich feller and its your round in the pub:-)

Biggest thing there compared to the Thames is the mooring.

We could save a few quid in mooring fees for sure, but the overall package MDL offer is almost 'Rockstar'!

Electric Gates, Mike Gates, Pristine bogs and showers, Water, leccy (Metred) safe car parking, camera, security, beautifully manicured flora and fauna, little yellow birds flitting around, a top notch restaurant and Broker, and the best Cruiser Club on the Thames.

Thats priceless!

Thing is we get all that at Burton Waters as well for a quarter of the price that you pay. The only downside is that the Fossditch, well it aint the Thames is it, but it does have its charms:D
