Quicksilver 855

Hi Bouba,
I just saw your another reply for "handling the single shaft".

When I had the training courses, I drove a single shaft boat. So my question is just opposite,

"what is the difference between handling a single shaft and a outboard?"
Transom power (outboard or sterndrive) is probably not a lot different going forward. But in reversing you are able to follow your propeller so it more or less goes where you point it. This allows a very nice docking technique to come along side a dock and also leave. Approach the dock slowly at an angle of between 30 and 60 degrees depending on wind conditions. When you are a few yards off the dock go into neutral and glide in at the same time turn the wheel hard over towards the dock then give it a burst of reverse. With a bit a practice you will come right up along side the dock perfectly straight and exactly where you want to be. To leave a dock just turn the wheel all the way in the opposite side from the dock, a bit of reverse and the boat will gently leave the dock without touching the sides in all but the strongest on dock wind.
But remember this is for a single engine you still have the option of twins

Thank you very much, Bouba.

I know twin outboard motors has much better maneuverability but never had a chance to feel it.
But I think I need more practice.

Peter, as a serious customer you should be able to get the dealer to take you out in a boat before you buy. Make the guy work for his commission and ask to try a single and a twin

Hi Bouba,
Yes, I agree with you. Thank you very much for reminding me about this. I will ask him
to arrange this.

The Quicksilver is probably cheaper because its American.

I thought that the Quicksilver Boats which are sold in Europe are made in the Quicksilver factory in Poland, where they also make the Arvor make of Diesel Inboard Fishing Boats.
When the Pound was higher more Polish boats were imported into the UK. and just as I have sold an old Bayliner Speed boat to a Polish buyer together with a Zetor tractor to another Polish buyer when I am ready to buy another boat I will try and cost up bringing a boat back from Poland.
When the transport turned up last week to take my Tractor back to Poland the transport was totally empty, and as loads of farm stuff is going back to Poland there must be loads of empty transport coming over here which could bring boats over.

Hi All,

I am new to the forum and just looking for a place to ask questions (maybe one day answer a few) and get some advice.

I am just about to purchase a Quicksilver 855. It will be my first boat and I will be taking a number of course pre and post picking it up. I am now semi-retired so looking for something for the family but something will also let me go fishing which is my main passion. Discounted the Pilothouse 755 due to wanting to use it for possibly France, channel islands etc with the family not to mention all along the south coast. Will berth it in Portland Marina where we have a house literally on the Marina doorstep but will leave it in water for extended periods as we live just outside London. It will be dry docked in winter.

Just wonder if anyone had one, been on one or had any advice. I am looking to go for a single Verado 300 which on this boat gives 369Km cruise range. Cruise speed 29knots and top speed 37knots. Still debating twin versus this single but I have been advised to go single for maintenance, fuel economy, speed, handling, fist boat etc. Twins have same range (2 x 115hp) but a lot less speed.

Anyone got an opinion or advice on this let me know. I had looked at the Merry Fisher 855 but this is very similar, same layouts ..maybe a better deal...

Many Thanks
Hi

We are just in the same position as yourselves; first time boaters, due to retire, close to Weymouth-Torquay area with a plan to go down the French canal system to the Med and have just seen a Quicksilver 855 weekend centenary we are interested in and wondered

Did you buy Q/S 855?
Twin or single?
Anything you would tell us about it that would help our decision making

Our initial boat of preference was a Jeanneau Leader 9 until we saw this one, which gives 2 proper cabins, the aft kitchen/full height doors at rear etc....

First time motorboat buyer here with two young kids (2 yrs & 2 months) and a non-boating wife. I have plenty of sailing experience but absolutely zero motorboating.

Which one did you go for?
