The original sales invoice is the best proof you have and is ideal for showing to any interested Customs people. Always assuming that VAT was paid on the boat in the first place of coure. If it was originally exported VAT free then you're in a more difficult position, but as long as you show proof, that's all they need.

Then I have a major problem because the only VAT paid proof I have is a photocopy of the French VAT certificate. My boat is however Jersey registered.

Doesn't exist as the boat was VAT free when it first went to Jersey, later owner paid the French VAT to keep it there. I guess he submitted the original to reclaim the VAT (in Ireland) and I just have photocopies.

Re: Proof of VAT paid-thanks

Naaah! Its not a problem, the photostat is the proof because it gives a reference number all they have to do is check their records. Anyway if anyone makes a fuss I shall smile sweetly at them and flutter my eyelids whilst putting my forefinger on my cheek and looking coy.

You need to be a bit careful here Byron. You know C&E make most of their arrests from private, anonymous tip-offs!!

I should stay on your garden 'til the heat's off.

Re: UK \"Proof\" - no such thing

A vat invoice seems to do the trick - but is of course no proof whatsoever. If the boat is "not" VAT paid...it would still have a vat invoice. Lots (most?) of non-vat -paid boats pay the vat - and then reclaim it. Likewise everything you touch at work - has a vat invoice - but then a vat reclaim. Abroad, it's all different, I believe, and they have vat certificates that may mean something.
