Problem with Renault diesel engines

Hi All,
My Heavenly Twins Cat has two Renault diesel engines (8hp I think). Both engines, but the starboard one in particular will only go into gear at very high revs, you have to push the morse control right up and when it kicks in it goes forward very fast, giving you very little control at close quarters. If you bring the morse control more than a little lower it loses gear again (does a similar thing in reverse).
Makes for some very difficult and embarrassing manuvering.
Any ideas?
I am not very up on engines but will relay any answers to DP. Any marine diesel engine experts that would let us give them a ring or give a cheap consultation in North Wales!?
Thanks!
Selina

THanks for the reply!
My DP is used to car/motorbike engines but having trouble finding anything to adjust on these Marine engines. Can you describe where the remote control cables are!?

Sounds more like the Morse control - either wear or incorrect adjustment of the cables.

On my new installation - a Teleflex ( I used to have a combi gearbox ) the control lever moves through the first 45 degs to fully engage the gearbox but the throttle hasn't moved at this stage - the throttle control happens in the next 45 degs.

Google Teleflex Morse and have a look at some of the control units and check their applications, and specifications, which would give you an indication what to look at on your boat control adjustments.
Note when making adjustments the gear selection forward/reverse, the throttle cable should be disconnected at the engine end. the manual for your gearbox should give travel deminsions for the selection lever on the box itself, set that up first, adjusting at the hand control as neccessary to get the proper cable travel at box connection to fully engage forward and reverse, once that is set up correctly then move your attention to the throttle travel and adjust as neccessary ensuring that when you have fully engaged either forward or reverse that the throttle motion lever/control on engine is still in idle position, and will progressively increase engine speed as the hand lever is moved further.
You may well have a problem with the cable equilizer between the two engines if the problem is only occuring on one engine, check this too.

Just spoke to DP, it does go into gear but does not catch/have propulsion except on high revs, makes a whining noise, then catches and kicks in, any clearer?

He has fully engaged lever by hand and revved it and it still acts the same so not the morse control. Something to do with the clutch/gearbox mechanism and prop.
