Wow, what a minefield. Bugger Brexit and all who launched her.

Spent a couple of days looking into Spanish residency and it is not for us at the moment, too big a leap with issues like losing UK health care, matriculation of boat, Spanish tax liabilities etc.

Portuguese residency might be nice to have, but again the paperwork and baggage that go with it are unclear and anyway it seems it would not give us a way out of the 90/180 rule in the Canaries.

So we are going to set off on a trip with no clear ending, no firm long term plans, just a series of alternative possibilities, staying flexible and with the motto that it is better to travel hopefully than to arrive firmly in mind.

Thanks everyone who contributed, but frankly it generated more heat than light.

I know a couple of yachties in San Sebastian marina who were there for ten and twelve years respectfully until an official suggested they should get residency and pay metriculation on their old boats. Borrowed addresses and a few hundtrd Euros poorer, paid an abogado, job done. They are relaxed in the islands too.

We don't know what the covid situation will be but what we do know is that thousands of Alfacinhas will be coming down and could easily cause a lockdown in September.

Experience from the last lock down.

All people with Portuguese residencia, were treated as Portuguese and had greater freedoms. For example, residents could go sailing; non-residents, even if they were EU citizens, couldn't.

Result, here in Lagos, non-Portuguese residents in the EU got Portuguese residencia so that they could enjoy the same freedom of movement that their non-EU British friends with Portuguese residencia could.

Barmy - but it is Portugal. ;)

You prefer blackheel or blackloll?

Read through this very useful thread rather quickly. Am I right in thinking that Spanish temp. Residency incurs wealth tax on boat and conformity with Spanish flag requirements whereas Portuguese does not?

Can’t answer for Spain but temporary residency in Portugal carries no strings.

Went to the Tavira Camara today. Applied for our 'Right to Residence' (also commonly referred to as Temporary Residence). All very straightforward. We collect our certificates tomorrow.;)
We've got an appointment for Thursday morning for our TIE swap, the new one takes a few weeks to process....
