Rowan Bay is delightful. We kept our Fulmar there for several weeks some years ago. However with the wind in the west and an out going tide it can be very wet in the inflatable getting to the boat from PD. Also left boat on mooring late Sun evening and returned Fri pm to find only one strand of the 20mm nylon mooring left intact!

I have been told to use the 8 strand type rope and was planning on using 2, one slack as a backup and both sleeved with pvc tube. We might be getting there late sometimes so don't really want a long wet ride out, won't make me very popular with the family!

If you are an hour away from PD then you're also an hour away from Rowan Bay as they are right next to each other! In effect they are the same place, the Rowan bay moorings being quieter and less choppy but a little more of a schlep in the dinghy. Not that much of an issue if you're using an outboard.

Access to the water is key. You can store your tender at Dinas boatyard for £100/year, but take a look at the ladder during a few heights of tide. Not so bad on your own but could be quite hairy carrying the outboard.

Best option I found for Rowan Bay was to head to the mooring and pick up any passengers / provisions from Rowan Beach (there is a path through the woods from the road) Likewise, when heading back drop 'em off there and suffer the ride

Also - if you're a bit nervous about parking, Rowan Bay has 1 line of ten moorings with good spacing. PD has around 60 odd in banks of 3 and as well as being closer together there is quite a bit more tidal influence.

Could be an option to take the tender along the path using launching wheels? Would depend how good the path is I suppose but is certainly worth a look. I think we are going to go down at the weekend for a look, might even take the tender and see how easy it is from different launch sites

Rowan bay is ace and you have had plenty of sound advice about the Place
Your ding with 5 hp will be ideal but watcht it on Springs with wind against tide
You will have to be canny and look for the back eddies.
We are about most days during the Season and have a few large ribs if you get swept to Caernarfon!:D
It might cot you a dram or 3 for the tow though:D:D:;)

It will need a hard eye & moused shackle in the strop to bouy connection.

Or you could hitch a lift with Roys tender on one of his regular trips between his elegant liner moored in the lonely wilderness of Rowan Bay and the local take-away. You might even be able to persuade him to tell the hair rasing tale of the day when the outboard of his tender failed. Definately testament to the strength of the current in that neck of the woods.

Your right I have had plenty of good advice and all is very welcome so thanks to all.
Very kind offer if we get swept away, hopefully wont happen but if it does certainly worth more than a few drams, maybe a few bottles!
Still not made the final decision on either yet, both places seem to have their good and bad points so i think we will go down as soon as we get the chance and see which we think will be easier for us

The Harbour master at Caernarfon suggested Dinas boat yard for having the strop made up. Its the splicing I would struggle with so I think its best to have a professional one made!

Go and see James (works at PD) he will show you how to make one up, but it may cost you long term, he's one of the North Wales Mob. Philiz or one of the others will introduce you.

Thanks Tom, Steve(tsb240) has told me a few names/boat names so when we get down there we will look up a few. It would be good and probably a lot cheaper to be able to make up my own strops and mooring lines. A few beers/whiskeys is a small price to pay!
