Whatever way you look at it the virus has killed 0.063% of the population.
(45,000 - pop 67 million). Certainly it is mainly targeting the baby boomer age group which is probably the most fortunate generation ever to live in these islands. I being one of them.

It's difficult to find some kind of yardstick to make sense of it all.

It's been said that it's the worst crisis since the war. Including civilians WW2 killed 0.93% of the population. This of course is spread over 6 years.

Where do we go from here ? Everyone has their own view on this which has to be respected.

I'd have to listen again, but some of the preconceptions people have do seem to be at odds with the facts. For example, the average number of years of life lost is 11- which rather puts paid to the idea that most people were on the verge of dying. What the program stressed was that if someone is already c.80 years old, they probably have quite a few years left to go. Life expectancy of an older person is not the same as the average lifespan for all ages- something that is quite interesting when you think about it, but perhaps not immediately obvious.

You could explain it with an anecdote though. Most of us will know a few people in the 75-85 age group. I'm sure there are lots in sailing clubs all over the country. These people are not all at death's door, many of them are living quite full lives.

Another issue is co-morbidity: it could be assumed that anybody with an underlying health condition is about to peg it anyway. But again, this isn't really true. Most older people will have picked up a variety of health issues over the years and these are not in themselves a death sentence.

Amused to hear you "know" a few people over 75. I'm in my mid 70s, as are most of my friends, several in their 80s as well so, perhaps I'm more familiar with illness due to aging problems, I've lost 4 friends in the past 6 months but only one of whom was to Covid which he caught in hospital, aged 92, the others were in their 70s. I'm also an ex residential home owner and have been present at the point of death more times than I care to remember. One thing you notice as you get older is more invitations to wakes than drunken parties.

At the present time, we have a couple of friends with terminal cancer who are unlikely to see the autumn and Covid would see them off far quicker. They are typical of the people I mentioned who would die anyway and many others would have gone with flu in a normal season without lock down but Covid got them instead. I will be more interested in the number of excess deaths when this is finally over.

Yes...If only we had had Corbyn, McDonald and Abbot handling matters..............
It could hardly have been worse, and might have been better as at least they care for the people. I dont like Corbyn, but Abbots take that all issues are racial might actually have helped the health and care workers.

A self serving proven liar, with "Im above you all grey emminence" at his side is the perfect storm

We dont need this sort of stuff or language here. I have pressed the report button.
I think the language I used was kindly for a proven liar who had been sacked twice for such behavior, known adulterer and reportedly a very very lazy ex mayor. Perhaps your standards are lower than mine and you accept transgressive nincompoopish behaviour in a country's leader .

If so quite frankly you are more than a bit dim
