The strip down has started this afternoon.

Drives off for strip down and reseal, flush oil emulsified oil, new seals, check bearings, gears cone clutch, measure shims and tolerances etc.

Some parts removed from engine to make base unit more allowable to be man handled out the boat as engine hatch is smaller than the length and width as a built up unit, although I fell at the first hurdle as the hinge bolts for the hatch are under the teak decking!!

Most parts now removed to slim the engine down to a size where it can be parted from the bobtail to allow me to move it forward and lift it the 18 inches to allow the sump pan to be removed ( parts removed so I can get at the sump bolts)

The alternator main support bolts sheared as it's never been undone, so a little heat should sort that Monday, one more front foot bolt and forward it goes.

Anyone wondering why I'm not taking the bobtail with it? Simple there isn't enough room forward to lift the engine should it still be attached.

While it's stripped there are many hose clips that req replacing as volvo skimped and fitted mild steel ones to save a penny at build. New hood bushes as well as it's so easy now to fit them, clean out the grease holes in the steering hoods etc. I've found 10 years of grime-in the bilge area too, so far 2 screwdrivers and 3 spanners and remnants of various belts!

It is amazing where builders skimp stupidly. The boarding ladder on Rafiki was attached by non-stainless screws. Hence this year it became detached! Madness!

by design so they can sell you a nice new shiny boarding ladder when yours falls off in to the deep blue never to be seen again a year or so outside of warranty ;)

Sorry, too much of a tightwad for that. Actually the design is quite good, so the screws only locate the ladder, but do not have any load bearing requirement. However the locker that the ladder lives in usually has some water in it, as the drain is at the front, and Raf is a bit stern down, so I have to remember to empty the locker from time to time. This is how I found the screws had rusted through:(
