Slocum wrote amore or less factual account of his circumnavigation as a sailor and excellent navigator it was described exactly and concisely with some humor .I think just going to sea ,alone and recording your Philosophical discoveries might be of more value if you are a philosopher as Slocum was a navigator……..I was just pondering on the idea of going to sea and writing a tome on something you found out there,if you had thought of writing a book🙂

On the other hand, being able to think about nothing at all is very useful on lonely night watches.

“If you need to ask how much then you can’t afford it “
If you need to ask about writing a philosophy book then you won’t get round to it
Who’s Phil Soapy any way?

The one think about going to sea alone is that you don't have other idols to spoil you days of piece.

My standard answer when I am asked "how am I" is " I'm all right its al the other that cause the problems not me"

Lila - the follow on book from Zen and the art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Persig combines sailing and philosophy.

It's bloody hard work in places and if anybody completely understands all the concepts and ideas discussed in the book perhaps they'd let me know.

'Afloat' by Guy de Maupassant might appeal to the OP, and others.

It begins:

"This Diary contains no story and no very thrilling adventure. While cruising about on the coasts of the Mediterranean last Spring, I amused myself by writing down every day what I saw and what I thought.
I saw but the water, the sun, clouds and rocks,—I can tell of nought else,—and my thoughts were mere nothings, such as are suggested by the rocking of the waves, lulling and bearing one along."

Free of charge from: Afloat (Sur l'eau)

Is it a good read? I don't know, I haven't read it. But I'm going to..

I wouldn't have thought so.

The action takes place in the Med, not in UK coastal waters, and I can't imagine Maupassant going ashore to hand out religious tracts.

Au contraire, he would be more likely to go ashore to find a brothel and a bar,

I tried , I really tried when it first came out..
I dunno. it seemed to reflect the highs and lows of actual sailing in the writing depending on where he was in his head for each chapter..
And now we have Wiki of course !

Zen and the art was so refreshing after 20 years of hippy dippy “ yeah man” cultural offerings.
Pirsig had really been down in the hole. And a pretty competent ocean sailor too in latter years.
How do you follow ‘Quality’?
Live in the moment ?

Here’s a floaty boaty philosophy . I’m still technically on way way around the world, ooh at least half way..
The journey and the experiences and the people you meet give a wonderful, enduring and broader sense of this lovely planet.
I would be a rubbish RTW racer!

Of ourse there is the late Johnathan Raban…..Passage to Juneau
He is very funny in ‘Coasting’, wrinkling out the self determination, picadillos, peculiarities and foibles of the early solo sailors around the UK.

And he put a library, a proper library, into his boat. Probably had a cosy wheelhouse seat and a heater too.

Thoughts for the rias??
