Richard,

A few extra ideas, just to muddy the waters.

1) I've forgotten if the boat is being sold privately or through a dealer. If privately, why?

2) If you decide to buy than I can recall reading somewhere that if you use a marine finance house then they will run checks to establish proof of title. This will obviously be in their own interest as well as yours.

3) Can't remember if the boat is registered. Don't Boatmark run some sort of scheme that records finance/problems against boats?

Re: Priorities, priorities

Thanks for your offer. I've sent you a private message with the details of the boat. As a new user, in case you don't know, you can get private messages by clicking on User Options towards the top of the page.

It's for sale privately.

It had been for sale through a (Spanish based?) broker but at 8% more than advertised privately. And I think that was supposed to be a reduced price. It had not been advertised privately in the previous month or two's magazine, I can't be sure what other previous advertising there might have been but the broker it had been with doesn't advertise in MBY. Quite possibly it hadn't been advertised in the UK before because the owner expected the most likely buyer would be on the island. So far as I can perceive, the boat's been for sale since earlier in 2001 but, obviously, not sold for whatever reason!

SSR registered but I've read on the forum that it means nothing so far as proving ownership is concerned.

Applying for finance through one of the finance houses so that they check the ownership is a possibility. I'll think about that one; check out other quicker things first

Re: You are not being pushy

Thanks for that BA Peters' name and phone number. I think that's my most promising next step.

Re: Check log

Surveyor's report says that we got 27.4 knots on the sea trial at 2700 rpm. This was measured from the GPS system. Is this what might be expected?

Weight: four people aboard, not much personal kit but there was a RIB and outboard and (non functioning) generator. Flat, calm sea, no wind, sunshine, fairly balmy, didn't need the coats we took even in late November ... !

Report says engines were fairly easily started, both were seen to emit an unnormal amount of exhaust fumes at start up, particularly the starboard engine. To me, I saw no smoke from port engine and only a bit from the starboard but then I've got nothing to compare it with, being a newbie.

Any comments on above?

Re: Speed figures

that all sounds fine. 2700rpm is correct. I wd expect 29knots with clean bottom, 27knots when dirty, so that all sounds fine. There shouldn't be much smoke from those engines, so again that all seems ok.

Smokey engines

Surveyor's report said there was UNnormal amount of exhaust fumes on start up (not normal).

Anyway, owner now says boat has been sold to someone else so further comment is academic.

The search for a boat will continue but we'll look nearer to home next time and take with a pinch of salt the next person who claims their boat is like new!

Re: Good idea!

I think the owner must have read your posting, MattS. He now tells me that the boat has been sold to someone else and has taken exception to us asking the marina office if there were any outstanding debts on the boat (he claims I was 'skulking around'!). In fact we'd gone to look for him because he'd just disappeared after the surveyor had drawn our attention to the damaged Hull Indentification Number. You'll remember he said he didn't know how it had happened. When we next looked round he'd disappeared. Nobody saw him go. He hadn't said anything. At the time we were wondering if we were going to see him again!

It's all been quite an education. Expensive, mind, what with flights, car hire, accommodation, surveyor's report, etc. only to find the boat sold (I suspect) very shortly after we got to sea trial it.

We're that much better prepared for the next boat that we look at. Just hope it's nearer home next time! Now, who's got a *genuine* 42 for sale at a bargain price?
