I have always had red lights in saloon and heads but I am now told this is nonsense?
If you awake, having to go on watch at night, put on sunglasses. It preserves quite a lot of the 100% night vision acquired while alseep, but easily lost while trying to pull your boots on, light the cooker etc.
Or if you are on watch at night, properly using your night vision to keep a lookout and see the compass, but you need to pop below: put your shades on! Then you can use the light in the heads or chart table without totally ruining your night vision.
(Red for dimmed lighting is presently back in favour, after being supposedly de-bunked. There are trillions of surveys, experiments and studies, most seem to agree that red is better for dimmed lighting.)
