Your "life" relies, in part, on handouts from Brussels some of which comes from England, it's not a matter of isolation more a case of spongeing.

ATB,

John G

Yesterday I received my tax statement from HMRC. On the back is a breakdown of where tax goes in government expenditure. Assuming the figures are correct the proportion of my tax that goes to the EU is 0.006%. Far and away the smallest item and less than half of the next in the list which is overseas aid.

So, not sure that Portugal is getting much in the way of handouts from the British taxpayer.

I don't know why the UK govt sends less of your tax revenue to Brussels than everybody else's. The UK's net contribution to the EU is about £10bn and total tax receipts is about £500bn so thats about 2% of tax revenue

Hi,

I did say "some of which" & don't doubt that far more comes from the Germans than the English, but whatever the source,
it is still spongeing

This is a standard calculation that just applies a preset percentage to the amount of income tax paid in a year. I assume everybody gets the same statement. This is the second year I have received it.

I do not know whether the percentages are correct, but the ranking of the items of expenditure seem to make sense. The statement does have a pie chart showing the breakdown of how tax is spent.

Perhaps an opportunity for someone to email Corbyn to ask the question at the next PMQ.

Just wondered (like Graham) why you took the opportunity to use an old thread about VAT paperwork to air your prejudice with such emotive language. This is a boating forum, not the Lounge.

Well, because the post,#9, I replied to referred to cost of living & transport which you appear to considering "acceptable" in a boating forum & I stated a fact which directly connected to this post. Why a fact is considered to a prejudice eludes me, but I wish you good night.

Chip, Maybe I'm missing something but can only find a post which resurrects the old thread. Have Customs asked someone for the paperwork recently? Where? Graham.

Hi Graham,

The request for info this time is here http://liveinfo.lagosnavigators.net/httpdocs/advice-on-customs-form-t2l-vat-form/

Subsequent discussion is here http://lagosnavigators.freeforums.org/t2l-forms-t329-10.html and the last 5 posts, include the experiences of somebody (Wasagena) who went through the whole experience here in Lagos last year.

The latest case is also in Lagos so I wondered is this a local issue or are other berth holders in The Algarve being asked for Form T2L?

Cheers Chip

ps How long has Faro had the new open air bus terminus? Went to the old pick up point, no information and no bus. Had to grab a cab and almost missed my flight.

Oh yes, the Faro Airport parking situation is dire.

Well after all, it is Portugal - Rant over:cool:

Well I think it's safe to guess that there's much more than Individual Income Taxes, contributing to that £500bn.
Maybe a much higher proportion of some other taxes is meant for EU financing, while IIT contributes for close to nothing...
Regardless, also that 10 out of 500 doesn't sound right, is your source reliable?
Mind, if it's either a journo or a politician, neither deserve to be called reliable, in my books! :D

Firstly all figures are approximate but they're about right; its all out there on the internet from official statistics. £10bn pa is the net contribution ie the amount the UK actually contributes less the amount it gets back in subsidies etc. £500bn pa is the total amount of tax revenue collected by the UK govt. I don't believe there are any UK taxes which are predicated for one particular purpose or another; it all goes into one pot and then is spent by the govt as it sees fit so the 2% figure is correct
