Outboard left on boat in winter

In Liverpool???????????????????
I left my Honda 2.3 on my boat last year with no ill effects. I did give a coat of WD40 though, and ran it maybe 2-3 times during the winter when sailing.

My Mariner 20 is sitting on transom of my ex Soviet motor boat out there .... pulled up the bank in my back garden .... Winters here - already had -10C .. and will get colder ... down to -20C or lower at times ...

As long as water is drained out ... its fine ... no cover ... just sits there ....

I used to lift off and place in the barn ... but barn is unheated - so whats difference ???

When I had outboards on boats in UK - I always left on board ... just lifted out of water and locked away on board.

I had one fail on start-up in the Spring due to condensation corrosion of the crank bearings. I store mine in the shed, now, and give it a warm winter coat! You might be all right if you can get plenty of oil into the innards, though.

What risks are you considering? I guess it depends on how secure the boat, its location and the value of the outboard ? Is it visible to many or in a secure marina or left on board ashore in some remote boatyard.

My only concern would be that if I didn't take it off, someone else might. How serious a risk that is would depend on where you're moored. On a swinging mooring in Gosport I wouldn't leave any OB a couple of the local intelligentsia could carry. In a marina behind locked gates, I might be a bit more relaxed.

Both our outboards are still fitted. Though I would remove any outboard that was not fitted with a remote throttle etc. both our tender and cruiser would take hours of work, and besides, the cruiser is fully in commission and afloat.

There was a photo in one of the mags years ago - showed a guy with an outboard over his shoulder (OUCH !) .... walking along a Marina Pontoon ...

Caption read :

Do you know this guy ?

What was point of the caption / photo ? Because too many do not know who is literally next boat or few along

I've seen boat with chainsawed transoms where outboards have been stolen ...

Maybe it’s very heavy hence reluctance to remove?
Weight is the issue. It's a Mariner 25 and sits on the back of my Shetland Cadet on my drive. (Jaguar 25 long gone!). Weighs about 140lbs and I'm 76. Also with remotes it would be pain to remove. While it stays on the boat I can run it a few times over winter.
Thanks for all the responses.

On our tender (yam 25) we flush ours when we bring her home, check the oil levels, spray with WD and grease the nipples. Then the cover goes on the boat, which covers the engine too. That’s it other than trickle charging the battery every month for a couple of days. Seems to work.

So finally enough information for somebody to start to give you a sensible reply. 140lb engine out of water on your drive.

I guess one question might be about how visible the motor is (and how much can be hidden out of sight) and how secure you think your neighbourhood is.
Otherwise leaving in the boat but perhaps lowering and putting chocks under the transom to support the weight might be my approach.

On your drive ? Put a decent lock on it and leave it there ...

Just supposing it did get nicked ... I assume boat is insured ? Also being on drive - it may be that House Insurance may cover it if not ... I was surprised at what HI covered when my Snapdragon was broken into in the boatyard.
