Hmmm, just moved my boat from its mooring to club pontoons to have her lifted out for the winter on Tuesday and I noticed the aftmost injector on the Beta 20 (2003 vintage) was spitting neat diesel from its base, where it disappears into the block. Despite this the engine seemed to be running ok. Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening and what needs to be done to fix it?

Needs to be pulled out and new sealing washers fitted.

If you are sure that the engine is running OK, ie not "missing" on one cylinder, it is possible that it's a leak on the excess fuel return connection. That doesn't involve disturbing the injector.

I don’t think it’s the fuel return line, the fuel is bubbling & spurting from where the injector goes into the engine block. I don’t have a tachometer (well I do but I haven’t fitted it yet) and being deaf it’s not easy for me to claim it’s not missing a beat on a cylinder - maybe it is!

Yes, thanks for this, I wasn’t even aware there were sealing washer but I’ve done some googling and there are 2 x washer type thingies on each injector. I would guess it’s exactly this and one or other (ones a heat sink) has perished.

It looks a fairly simple fix and I’m about to search YouTube to see how easy it’ll be to remove and replace an injector!

I've found that one of these (or similar, if you have the room to use it) can make the process much simpler https://www.georgelodgedirect.co.uk/Products/002c0001000b/SP+08571000/
I’m on a learning curve so maybe wrong - I thought my injectors a screwed into the block? I think this tool is for pulling out injectors which are held in with clamps? All I think I need to do is remove the fuel runoff line and then use a 22mm socket to unscrew the injector?

Having said that, Ive just watched a Youtube video and how the injectors are removed wasn’t very clear and also there was no mention of washers or seals! So I’m still not sure I’m confident enough to do a repair myself. Any further advice would be welcomed.

Yes in principle the injector just screws into the block. However you mentioned a heat sink or heating shield, therefore there is probably at least 2 copper gaskets, one below the heat shield and one above. In order to replace the bottom most gasket you'll need to pull out the heat shield. Now it may come out easily with the injector, but if it doesn't then you will need a puller to take it out. You will also probably need a long length socket of the correct size and a torque wrench to get the correct tightness. Finally there is probably also gaskets under the fuel return pipes. An engine schematic should show the exact setup.
I expect someone experienced with the Beta 20 will be along to Clarify the setup.

My experience is with CAV injectors which were held in by two securing nuts, one on either side. Once they had been undone the puller came into play. It would appear that your injectors are of a different design, sorry for the confusion.
