Orca attack

Don,t know if pi**ing off a 4 ton Orca with a "Banger" is really a very sensible thing to do.
Thrown from a large fishing boat is one thing - from a small lightweight sailboat is quite another

Reports suggest they bugger off smartish.

The idea that you mustn't piss them off while they are disabling your vessel is a bit defeatist.

Word is that they HATE the noise and leave pronto. It doesn’t harm them but their underwater hearing might be ringing for a while.

Just an idle thought, but would it work to tow some random bits of junk metal, either so it can clatter together and make the noises the big fish don't like, or as something to distract them from the rudder?

First Mate and I were on a charter Sport fishing boat out of Whale Island Harbour, Ilsamarada in the Florida Keys.

While catching Skipjack for bait we were bitten off several times by very large Porpoises. Estimated weight 3000 lbs.

The Skipper, the very well known Skip Bradeen, lit and threw several very loud sinking fireworks at them. The buggered off pretty quick and went elsewhere. :)

But like bangers used to frighten off bears, guides dont shoot em, they use bangers, ive seen vids of them disappearing sharpish when they are set off. Doesnt antagonise them, they dont like them

The Orcas seem to have started attacking at night which as far as I can see was almost unheard of until last month.
They also seem to be moving South of Lisbon again.

Any evidence?

Any results from the CA research website on the number of passages that undertaken without incident?

To be honest it is an awful site to record your passage and I gave up. I wonder how many others have done the same. Faro to Falmouth back in August and we might have seen some type of whale about a mile off.
