I believe but await to be corrected that the oldest yacht club in Britain is the Royal Thames Y.C. especially bearing in mind that before changing their name in the 1700s they were called the Cumberland Fleet.

Well that's as may be Byron, but I was at Starcross Sailing Club a few weeks back and they claim to be the oldest sailing club in the country!!

And I bet there's plenty of others who make the same proud boast.

Thought it might be the TAFFY YACHT CLUB under the Patronage of the Marquis of Bute and based in the moat of Cardiff Castle.

My understanding is that you personally formed the ROATH PARK skiff and punters club before the castle was built , clearly mentioned in the Mabinogion and recounted with pride by druids through the ages.

Re: Liverpool YC

As far as i am aware the oldest club is liverpool Sailing club

The club can trace its roots back the 12th century (1155) and the first viking raid.
The Norse raiders were actually en route to sack anglesey where there were beleived to be large gold deposits. Anglesey had working goldmines upuntil the middle of the 14th century
The invaders came round from the north and passed lancashire and cumbria coast unmolested. The inhabitants of lancashire had taken to living much further inland except for the port of whitehaven which was heavily defended and had no wealth to speak of.

When the 3 longboats arrived in the mersey they landed by the famous pool of liverpool ( the site of which now forms the albert dock)
The invaders where approached by five 8 year olds who offered to ' looke after yer long boat for 2 groats mister'
The invaders paid and forced their way along the dock road heading north along the river front. Unfortunately they came to the bottom of upper parliament street. Here they met with fierce resistance and were beaten up by the unfriendly locals. This fracas took place close to the site of the first LYC club that was formed to celebrate the victory.

The vikings retreated to their boats. Of the three two had gone completely and the other was on bricks with its oars knicked and the guy who beats the drum to keep the rowing rythm had also been removed and sold four hours later in a pub in New Brighton.

two long boats where found burnt out near hoylake. but the locals restored them and started the earliest racing. The two teams would spend one week racing for the hand of the fairest maiden of Knotty ash. The first recorded race was 1155. Unfortunately plague and much disease had swept through knotty ash. this meant the women were somewhat disfigured and inclined to be irritable due to agues and fevers. The women were said to cacklle like crows making a caw caw sound. this eventually got corrupted by the scouse vanacular. The week was hence known as cows week. And was later stolen by jealous younger yacht clubs.

Can't count the Royal Cork it's in Ireland anyways they have the dubious honour of having managed to lose the right to fly a White Ensign.
