Re: Current Thoughts...

Now I remember why I didn't like this format last time we had it...

There's no doubt that the "new" format (as in the format we used to have, before the old format was introduced) makes it nice and easy if you are just browsing in and out of the boards, simple to see what's been posted recently, and probably helps to prolong the life of popular threads that otherwise die on slipping off the first page (is that a good thing? I'm not sure).

However, there are two serious problems:

Firstly, it makes it very difficult to find a particular thread if you want to check one particular aspect (e.g. if you are checking the responses on a thread you started).

Secondly, It will lead to the early death of serious but less popular threads. These tend to attract fewer postings and so will slip off the top of the board much quicker.

So on balance I vote for a return to the previous layout.

Got to say I'm a NO voter on this one.

I like to scan the threads in order of arrival; the amount of dross that gets posted on some 'popular' threads means that these will keep popping up in the way of subsequent threads. This requirement would probably would be better served if there was a 'date posted' order which displayed all active threads.

Re: Current Thoughts...

I'm with Bedouin on this one. Could there perhaps be a user preference set so that both camps can be catered for?

How sad. Do you ever feel jealous ...

of the webmaster on the US Cruising World BB who regularly gets a pat on the back from posters?

Anyway, just to say how much you are appreciated, even though your experiment did result in you sending your button pressing licence renewal to the wrong authority, your button pressing plan is now subject to the new flashing light tax, the button fell off and fatally injured your editor, and the blue shiny button-pressing lobby have labeled you as a colourist.

Re: Current Thoughts...

yes i'm with bedouin. current is fine for the rapid-fire fights er discussions, but serious stuff can be lost. Also, a new thread can quickly fly off the bottom as it looks old - if a dozen or so other (older) threads are answered beforehand.

Nope. Interesting idea, and good to try it, but it doesn't work for me - too easy to lose track of threads that interested you when you come back to the board because they've all jumbled themselves up. So my vote's for unpressing that big red button of yours, Kim. (I hope it has an "unpress" feature?!)

Cheers
Patrick

I\'m a bit thick

But I have just figured all this out. This is a much better system, keeps the topical and current stuff in the foreground and lets old issues gracefully fade away. You have my support.

Have you been counting Kim? Or will you start a Red Button thread and a Blue Button thead and get an autocount?

If we want to do anything special we can set up a poll and that could be quite a lot of fun (by the way, do people enjoy using polls?). Or I can simply look through the increasing number of posts if it comes to a count.

To be honest I think it would break out fairly even at the moment and I'm not sure we get the best result if we base it one half per cent more people saying yes or no.

What I'm trying to do is learn a bit from the various comments. I cannot move on any code changes at present as we are still stuck into other issues so the deeper enhancement ideas are useful but don't present any immediate relief. However, I am trying to see if there are some devices we already have, that are not perhaps particularly well understood by all, that might help with the compromise.

I've just posted a thread on the Website Feedback forum regarding this.

In the meantime the trial continues.

Sorry Kim: I hate this date slip. I like to read most recent posts from the top, and check the threads by the red thread update numerals.

Plus I posted question early afternoon sunday (31st). As It had no immediate answers it is now (monday 07:00am) well down the list behind all the more recent threads and will most likely never get seen.

Please go back to the original system ..IIABDFI..if it aint broke dont fix it.

Regds Nick.
