At great personal risk, but bowing to recent demand, I am engaging the dateslip button tonight. This cunning device automatically promotes the thread with the most recent post to the top of the list, bringing the urgency of its very being to your attention.

You cannot default back out of this setting via User Options - you are stuck with it. So please give it a go and provide any feedback via the General Discussion: Website Feedback area or, if you desire, PM or email me.

Not sure that this is a good idea. The board is fine as it is. I scan down to see the new posts already. If it ain't broke don't.......................etc.
P.S. Is it something to do with advertising revenue?

No, nothing to do with ad revenue. Hey, that would be easy, I'd just get all autocratic and say we needed it to buy next week's loaves and fishes. Instead this is a quasi-democratic response to quite a few requests over the previous month or so. It's a trial, nothing more and the only ultimate loser will be me but at least I know that before I start.

What colour is it, Kim?

Is the "dateslip button" a big red shiny thing, prominently located on the top of your server? Does it have a safety cover, which has to be hinged out of the way before you can press it? Will pressing it cause a momentary power slip in the National Grid? We need to know these things!

Re: What colour is it, Kim?

I have to confess it is big, red, shiny and protected by a plastic cover. I had to convert my 'ordinary button pressing licence' into a 'pressing big, shiny, red button pressing licence which took about a day and cost a bit. I then had to file a button pressing plan with the ministry of slipping dates before commencing operation as well as getting all those within a 50-metre radius of me to sign a form saying they wouldn't sue me via the no cure/no pay man if they were subsequently harmed mentally, physically or otherwise by the experience. It looked as though we could go ahead but then I realised my very actions might be construed as being offensive by the blue shiny button pressing crowd and so I waited until nothing was around before proceding.

After that it was all plain sailing really...

A big Yes

Makes it much easier to see what is this half-hours hot topic. If it's dull it just drops down the list.

Stick with it.

OK - going against the grain here - and I know I've only been using the forum for a week - but I couldn't understand why it was in such a funny order before - seems much more logical now - so I like your "big red button" !

Sound and fury

Kim

Paradoxically, for things that involve using 'modern' technology, forums seem to generate a great deal of conservative 'don't you dare tinker with it' reaction.

So . . .
a) keep trying things out - that's the only way progress is made
b) try to separate the initial noise of complaint from more considered opinion - pro or con
c) don't be afraid to admit it when trials just don't work out, and revert to the pre-trial position

My thoughts about 'last updated' order ? - too early to say as yet, but I do think it's well worth a go.

Re: For the love of all things pure NO!!!!!!!!!!

I prefer it the first way i.e. when the original order of the threads is retained - I find it easier to locate what I am interested in simply from the approximate position and order. I find the 'jumping' threads harder to follow.

So that's a 'No' vote then!

A no vote from me

This new way may mean you will see the hot topics but it makes it more likely that if someone asks a question that only a few know the answer too it will quickly get lost down the list and not seen by those who only log on occassionally

Please can we have the old one back?
