After 10 years my bilge sump is an unpleasant cocktail of water and slimy lumps of oil. Does anyone have any top tips for cleaning bilges and removing the oil?

Nappy liners are a cheap alternative to oil absorbent material sold for this purpose. These will soak up a lot of the oil then go to your car accessory shop and buy a bio degradable mixture for breaking down oil. You can use somethinmg like Gunk but the smell is not too good.

Try http://www.ketogroup.com/mycelx/mycelx.htm for their Mycelx range. no personal experience of this product, but it is supposed to do the job.

Wash-up luquid then .,..

I liberally squirt washing up liquid in the bilges to slop around while sailing ...... breaks up the gunge and also helps stop it all sticking to surfaces. Empty bilges and then to really get them spot-less -------- oven cleaner sprayed over and left for a few minutes then wiped off. A good rinse off after to remove all caustic traces and hey-presto the cleanest bilges you ever did see !!!! Squirt some fresh washing up liquid around and good for another season.
