To all you computer literate sailors, a computer novice sailor needs some help. Having a new PC need some advice on which Internet provider to go for. Having seen some fairly adverse comments on AOL in a previous thread. There might be someone out there who can give some useful help, tips etc. on providers.

Thanks

Peter

I use Telewest' s Blue Yonder broadband service which has so far (18months) been pretty good. You do need to live in an area they service though. Use the postcode checker on this page to see whether you're in their service area.

Little known tricks ....

OK so you want Broadband at home and get fixed up .... then you start travelling and want to connect and download your e-mails ..... what do you do ?

Well over the years I have found the cheapest way to do this is :

Wherever you are travelling to - search the web for FREE ISP services. Generally they have nationwide 'local' numbers.

BUT that is not the end of the story ..... as you don't need to use their e-mail addresses that you will likely set up with them. As long as the SMTP is set correctly - you can use the same e-mail address wherever you are.

If you want to use a number of e-mail addresses and travel - use a Auto-router such as Autoroute SMTP ......
url : http://www.mailutilities.com/ars
install and change all e-mail smtp to 'localhost' ....... your e-mail program will then look for loaclhost and Autoroute SMTP will be called and you have all SMTP's of your providers listed in it. It then chooses the right one to use ..... (I actually play it manually to get the fastest change .... by selecting the smtp inside the program ....)

I have ISP's in UK, Latvia, Estonia, France, Switzerland etc. etc. and they all fall into the AutorouteSMTP system without problem.

As a note - I used to use Compuserve / then AOL after they amalgamated ..... got fed up with paying 'time-on-line' charges in addition to the phone bill ...... my way above is basically a local call and no on-line charges.

When you return home to b/band ..... the AutorouteSMTP will work just the same ..........

(Having the other addresses - gives you the opportunity to re-route all that spam crap as well !!!!!)

In UK - I use the old Netdirect ... which became Ision / NDO .....

Definitely would not go with AOL. Had my username and password stolen so many times for the purpose of distributing junk and spam mail. AOL also takes over programs on the computer, after uninstalling it my Outlook never worked again.
