Has anyone heard something new about the tax for 2015? Is this issue dead?

We (the CA) have been in touch to clarify a number of issues on Greek practices, and we have been told that discussions are underway with the ministry of Finance again - having stalled in the later part of last year. They have at least followed our requests for the tax to be Annual or monthly but from the day you register. They thus do not have to implement it from Jan 1.

Right now the Civil service and especially the Finance ministry is in a state of paralysis with the announcement of a general election.

Watch this space - who knows.... We have regular contact with the Shipping Ministry which is the body that has to implement it, so as soon as there is something concrete to report, it will be.

The probable general election in Greece has thrown everything into confusion.

The theory is easy enough to follow - perhaps to put peoples' assumptions to rest - the annual tax (like Road Fund Licence in UK) will be collected by a "yet-to-be-set-up" organisation, and inspected by the Port Police, (like Road Fund discs used to be inspected by the local bobby); local charges, mooring fees, port dues will be collected by "local" authorities (like parking charges by local authorities) - so it's unlikely the circulation tax will replace the costs of mooring at ports.

If, as looks likely, Syriza get in and try to re-negotiate the €CB & IMF loans, I can see a collapse of at least two of the current Greek banks, and a drying up of government income, I suspect the collection of the tax will become very much a back-burner issue.
Inadvisable to hold one's breath, though I suspect, when faced with abyss into which Tsipras is proposing Greece jumps, he'll become much more amenable to reason and little different to Samaras.
Expecting any hard news out of this Greek tragicomedy is naive, I'll expect to play it by ear and guile when I get back in March.
We live in interesting times!!

Speaking purely personally, I think it would be wise for anyone planning to visit Greece in a yacht in 2015 to budget to have to pay this tax. Whichever party (or coalition of parties) forms the next Greek government they'll be looking to raise all the revenue they can, taxing foreigners, especially "rich" foreigners who own yachts, would be a very popular move amongst most ordinary Greeks. And with just about everything in place to start the tax it would be relatively easy for them to do so.

Yes, that would be prudent. But if Syriza wins on 25 January, I think their priorities will lie with matters more telling than a handful of €million from boaters, particularly with the administrative chaos which is likely to ensue. It might be just as prudent to root around in the bottom of drawers looking for old drachmas...;)

My iPad advises that I am now reading page 47 of this thread. And the conclusion is ????

That you are going to be reading 48, 49,50........ as this will run a long time.

As Tony said - we think the computer systems are in place - all boats are now supposedly in their new computerised register, so in theory they could be ready to go.

Our problem communicating with them is that we have established very good contacts - but any statement being released to us, has to go up the tree to the top for sign off, which is just not happening at the moment. So until this starts again, nothing will happen. But as Tony said - budget to pay it.
