difficult we have used both most recently Arun for a non standard Mainsail ,for our cat .ordered and one week and sail delivered within 8 days!!we have used crusader a couple of years ago for our westerly quick quality service no complaints. However Arun was the maker of the original catalac sails and they made hundreds.Crusader was the original maker of our westerlys gunter main and jib so they also must have had the pattern ready. .. so you pays your money takes your choice!
Arun made us a new staysail and jib for KS. Seemed pretty good.
Trouble is, most of us buy sails pretty rarely, and almost always think our new ones are fantastic because we're comparing against the tired old rags, so unless a sailmaker seriously screws up on a regular basis it's hard to get much of a comparison.
I've just had a new suit made by Kemp. They now have a place in Gosport so they are local in the Solent. They were the most competitive, and it's also felt a very "two way" process, with advice and discussions and them building what I wanted with a bit of customisation, and the finished sails look superb. Give Matt a call, tell him I sent you. No connection, just a happy customer.
We have just taken delivery of a new staysail from Hyde Sails. The local agent was extremely helpful, and the sail itself is well cut, robust and well finished. The price was very similar to Crusader (from whom I have bought sails before and been completely happy), the quality comparable but we chose on the basis of being able to work with their local agent.
Most local sailmakers have been mentioned so far in the thread. Doyle Sails at Shamrock Quay in Southampton I could also recommend for excellent personal attention and service. Just had a very nice spinnaker designed and made by them for a very reasonable price....and they sponsored the loacl club racing series.
I would also recommend Crusader who made the rest of my sails.
