New Project

Nothing original left on my boat to be fair. I have systematically replaced everything but the hull and blocks. Oh and headliner is still original. I like to get in touch with my feminine side and punish the plastic on occaision.
 
In the interest of honesty and that it may help someone else….I made a cock with sealing the rocker cover.

Most pleased with myself that I had done the sealant so neatly….I filled the engine with oil. Went a bit quick and spilt some. Wiped up job done.

Came back this morning to find a nice puddle of clean oil along the edge of the rocker cover. The engine is siting slight down. Damn it!

I figured out what I did from my photos. Went a bit thin in the offending area and caught the sealant with number 1 injector cable. It’s a tricky job on your own.

Anyway…2 hours later and all taken apart, cleaned old sealant, ran new and refitted. I’ve let the sealant contact the head but will let it go full off now and tighten the last bit in a few days. Fingers crossed I’ve done it right on both engines now. If it wasn’t for the stupid injector pipe design…be a 10 min job!
 
Nitrile Bonded cork sheet 3mm thick and a pizza cutter and make your own?
Someone suggested that a few years back but Volvopaul wasn’t keen. Can’t recall why. It’s very narrow in places. I think sealant works fine in the hands of someone with minimal skills……doesn’t say much for me ???

Unfortunately there are little raised sections that stop the rocker cover seating down flat on the head. I think the idea was to prevent over compression of the original gasket. There are 6 O rings on the fuel injectors that poke through the rocker cover too, so it's all a bit of a bugger and a lot bigger than a cornflake box.
The original and no longer available gaskets allowed for these things. Somebody on here a few years back did make some cork gaskets that from memory worked OK. I reused my original gaskets with a very slight film of silicon on the bottom - which fortunately seems to work.

6 weeks in total since removing them. New impeller cover bolts ordered and engines mounts is all that’s left but I’ll change them when the crane lifts them.

Did some wiring improvements too! I changed the “edc” blocks on both and did a new cable ( brown and blue wires) up to the top with a new plug to feed the remotely mounted shift actuators. They are protected by a 7.5 amp fuse which was located by the starter. It’ll now sit at the top off the engine. Must clean the last bit of old green paint off the loom ? I’m in love with heat shrink!

The worse job has been cleaning the rubber hoses. Hours of scrubbing with scouring pads and thinners. Worth it though.

Start on the engine bay next week ?
 
Cracking job and well worth the effort! ?
We did our rubber hoses outside in the middle of winter and with the acetone exacerbating the cold it was possibly the most miserable job I have done ever!

I did start losing enthusiasm on the 2nd set ??
 
The stbd engine in before looks to have a new SC on that is not Volvo green. If it's the original Ogura can you reach out and find where the original owner sourced it from please.

Bought it from Volvo. He’s got the old one still if you want to get it rebuilt (if yours is too far gone)
