New Project

Damn it!

Head coming off and going to engineering firm. Was trying to convince myself it tracked from the valve cover but I’ll never be happy leaving it. Bit annoyed tonight but better now than later…..I’d be even more annoyed when they are mint and back in the boat!

What a great thread, can’t believe I missed it until now. Good luck with it, cracking boat choice. sorry about the head, does it just need a gasket or are you having it skimmed just in case? Nothing to it but to do it, best thing that could ever have happened to this boat getting a proper going over. Enjoy ??

Thanks for the motivation! Checked and skimmed probably before new gasket etc…. It’s no biggie but was hoping I was near the strip down end. Should be quite a machine when done……I’ve seen a few online in nice condition recently but with wheezy AD41’s of big 7.4 v8’s.

Do you have them pressure tested as well.

Hi Mr Googler
Interested to know who will skim the head somewhere on the Island ?
If so whom ?
PM me if you prefer
Thanks
Timbad

As you may be aware, we've got KAD44's and I quite rate the, particularly in planing boats of this size. Nice and torquey and I don't think I've heard of one wearing out or even requiring a full re-build. Even the DPE drives seem to be pretty reliable with basic maintenance.

Once you've overhauled all of the ancillaries and checked all of the electrical stuff they should work well for you.

KAD43's - even better without ECU's :). Great build project, I do love these older Sunseekers, keep up the work MrG(y)

Whilst KAD43's don't have the ECU's they also don't have the electronic throttles.

I don't think I could go back to mechanical cable throttles so would need to install Glendenning or similar electronic controls if I were to purchase a non EDC boat.

Never had with EDC's so I don't know what I'm missing (y) my mechanical controls are well lubed and pretty smooth:)

Why would you want to add potential issues. Once upon a time to put on the handbrake in a car you pulled a lever that pulled a cable. Now you press a stupid button and if it goes wrong get your wallet out big time.

New is deffo not always better

Whilst I agree that electric handbrakes are solving a problem that wasn’t there I think the majority of modern cars have drive-by-wire throttles that rarely go wrong. I’d happily have it on a boat as it makes throttle and gear engagement so much lighter.

Yep,I wouldn't willingly go back to mechanical throttle and gear linkages .

I think a mechanical engine with stand alone electronic throttles is the best combo. I had 61a’s with Morse KE 4 controls. Just brilliant…..bloody expensive but brilliant.

Clearly there’s a well placed fear around ECU engines but such is the way of things. All you can do is cross fingers.

Im doing that a lot currently whilst the head goes off to the experts ?? The head is bloody heavy to carry about ??

coolers and sumps to go and that’s the stripping down done. Not bad seeing as they’ve been out the boat 5 days
