I have been offered a new boat (Bayliner 245 Cruiser) but with no engine.

Should I go for diesel and if so which engine, also what would the ball park figure be for purchase and install of the engine?

Go for deisel and get an accurate quote from Lancing Marine in Sussex. They usually seem to have te best prices and are always accomodating.

Does the bayliner 245 usually have outboard or inboard engine? If inboard, I have NEVER heard of anyone offering a Bayliner missing an inboard engine before?

The 245 must be inboard - and if so cant imagine them suppling one without an engine - mind you they could have had a quality control problem and just plain forgot it. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Re: humberside special

it was a one-off designed especially for Yorkshire and Humberside boat show, i believe, where boats that are short of an engine or two are very much sought-after.

Some how think, boats with no engines are for serious experienced types with loads and loads of boat and engine knowledge. Now I cant see the average guy buying a car with no engine, and the average guy knows a little bit about cars. Well enough to know that he dont fancy putting an engine in it!!

Re: humberside special

Erm... do they mean me?

Absolute no brainer this one, what an opportunity to fit a Merc D120 Diesel.

Come to think of it, I'll do a swap, A 2003 Bayliner 245 with no engine must be worth about the same as a Birchwood 27 with a new D120 Diesel. Then I can do it all over again!

Maybe I'll try a D3 this time.

Maybe I'll try and buy back the old BMW petrols, and convert the Bayliner from single to twin.

If I can't get a result on the swap. The Merc D120 would be the cheapest and best new option. Prob cost about £10K. I suggest a 17" pitch prop, and it should do about 26 kts, max 5 gph.

Only cost about £2K less to fit a new petrol, and you'd save that in fuel in the first year.

More than that, you'd have a 'mate' on the forum that now knows loads about the D120 for free tech support.

Ooh, I'm already getting excited, won't sleep tonight...................

I have replaced engines on two cars in my time and this has increased their value by more than the cost of the engine.

I take your point hlb, but I am one of those people that when I get involved in something I like to find out all I can even if some of the question seem a bit daft to old sea dogs like yourself. Also I wasn't looking to sail a boat without an engine (my guess is I wouldn't get very far with oars or my hands!)

"(my guess is I wouldn't get very far with oars or my hands!)"

I saw what looked like an 80' barge being rowed down the Thames last week. Huge 20-30 foor oars and an equally long oar/rudder thing on the back.
