AT LAST!!!!

I have finally found an end to the stripping down of my engine. I've ordered the parts and can start the rebuild as soon as they arrive.

Looks like I'll have her up and running in about two weeks. (cross fingers)

For those of you who helped I will give you a break down of the problems that developed and how I found them.
1. Engine lost power, big puff of smoke then rattles like mad.
2. Limp home to Chich
3. Engineer comes out tells me bottom end gone
4. 2nd Engineer comes confirms
5. Convinced they are wrong!!!
6. Remove Turbo to find turbine sticking
7. Send turbo for rebuild (£300) Peace of metal inside. (looks like a valve!!)
8. Remove manifold, heat exchanger etc (all fine)
9. Remove all SIX cylinder heads (has one per cylinder)
10. Number 4 has a broken valve!!!
11. Chamber of head looks like mashed spud
12. Piston also looks like mashed spud
13. Remove cooling system and then sump
14. Remove piston to check piston ring (they are all there)
15. Have a cup of tea.
16. Ring Dad for opinion on bores (agrees they are fine)
17. Ordered
a. new head (very glad it has 6) £300
b. Full set gasgets
c. Filters etc for both engines

Total bill will be around £900 and that will include servicing the starboard engine.

Quotes from engineers where between £5000 and £25000

SAVED SOME MONEY THEN HAVE I? (if it all goes well!!)

Phew!!

Well done! A certain satisfaction of doing it oneself! But what a load of muppets you've got for mechanics round there! I'm sure, from the description alone, over the phone, any number of decent mechanics would have said "sopunds like you've dropped a valve lad" Then come over done a compression test and confirmed it! Pillocks. No wonder people don't trust so called mechanics, most of them are glorified spare part fitters and not very good at that!

Chris,

was that £ 300 for a new head?
Brother had a VM diesel (same as yours with BMW Badge, Italian not German) in Range Rover six wheeler, went off roading at Billing last year, went over a hump and into water splash in his words "when the water was half way up bonnet, thought bugger, this may do some damage" then bang. Smashed 3 heads, bent 3 con-rods, trashed turbo etc....... Now running Perkins 4/236 non-turbo 69BHP, 75 MPH flat out because couldn't afford to fix VM!

So I'd be interested in someone with spares!

The Mitsubihi diesel fits a treat into the range rover. The kit only costs £250 and includes all the bits you need to transplant it. I was looking at doing it, but now its a toss up weather to fit an autogas system the the existing petrol. If you want a mitsi lump, I've got one knoking around in the garage. Needs a bit of TLC tho in the way of valve gear!

Sorry to sound a kill-joy amongst all these congratulations. BUT...... what are you doing about that piston? Surely not leaving it there if it looks like a mashed spud It doesn't appear in your a,b,c list which may also need to be extended to include big-end shells etc
Good Luck

Thought the same last Friday. Nearby lane floods from two sources - River Loddon and Black Swan Lake. Can be anything from inches to feet, but can't tell how deep it'll be unless you know which one is worse, as lane is a mile long and floods at different ends. Have been through in trusty Jeep when it has been 3'+ at parts, and regularly get called by Thames Valley Police to pull peeps out.

Going through Friday, it wasn't too bad, but just at deepest and narrowest part (so bow wave really builds up) white van driver came in other direction at speed, only maintaining way cos of speed and bow wave so far ahead of him. Water came up over my windscreen, just like taking green water in a boat. How I didn't take water into engine I'll never know!
