Also considering moving to Orca once my current Navionics subscription expires.

Seriously pissed off by the Garmin/Navionics withdrawal of the web-based route planning feature.
You can try the Orca app for free by installing from the iOS or Android app stores. If you have an Internet connection you can use the worldwide charts for free which can be nice for looking at far flung cruising areas. I found the Orca plotter software itself very limited and it wouldn’t be suitable for my use right now. The sail routing side of it is nice though.

I know, people say I just derail the thread, but orca has a lot of features that navionics used to have. Will it work with navionics equipment? Probably never. but you can get a tablet solely for plotting. There are waterproof devices speficially made for this. It's a better alternative in my opinion and I wanted to give OP the opportunity to look into it.

That's fine ... but the OP was actually quite specific about his request ...

Apologies if this has already been covered elsewhere.
I currently use Navionics on my humminbird chart plotter and pay the yearly subscription, but use paper charts for passage planning etc. (Kent ,Essex - nothing major)
Where I want to get to is to be able to plan the route on a laptop running my Navionics account and then electronically transfer the route data ( waypoints etc ) to my chart plotter . Is this possible ? I’m a bit dense on this type of thing really - any advice greatly appreciated

He already has paid for charts ... paid subscription ... so does he really need to look at another fee ? For a setup that moves even further from his original request ?

The OP basically needs to look at SD / MMC card transfer of his routes / planning ... that's it ...

Forget ORCA ... Active Captain etc etc.

On the Garmin I use Navionics charts. Before I got the Garmin I used my Android tablet to run the Boating App which is Navionics.

On the PC I use Bluestacks which is an Android emulator, and it runs the Boating App allowing you to log into your Navionics account and then plan your routes uploading them to the cloud. I can then get those routes on either my Garmin which uses the same account as the Android tablet and also on to the tablet when syncing my account.
On the tablet when you update your charts it also downloads any waypoints, routes and tracks you have put onto the cloud either from the PC or when you sync with the Garmin Active Captain.

There is a Hummingbird sounder on the boat which works intermittently, the plotters are Simrad with C-Map and sounder, and a Garmin with Navionics.

For the inland waterways I use the Waterkarten App which is easier to use to find details about what is on the waterways, and the lock gate VHF/telephone numbers etc. the app also covers UK inland waters but it does not do coastal waters.
