Following on from my ask about the cruising club... is Navily any good ? It looks closer to a online almanac .

Using the free version and it's excellent. I also contribute to it where I can which is the real value of such a system.

Agree that Reeds is a great source, but it doesn't cover as much of the coast since by it's nature it must cover the ports and marinas primarily, and it's very fact based (on purpose!). It has good reliable and curated data but lacks the "spirit" of community content. We can all see that an anchorage has land to the west, but we might not notice that the tide and swell makes it unpleasant. It's also handy to see a photo someone took three weeks ago of the building site on shore.

Between community stuff and the almanac I've given up on pilot books. With modern navigation tools I don't see a gap that needs filling there but do appreciate the browsable nature of them which lots of people like.

Why is no-one paying for it its only €20 a year...isn't it ?
Personally it's because I don't need their premium features yet and their ads aren't intrusive. I don't block their ads, so they are making revenue from me in line with my limited usage. Lots of subscriptions add up quickly even if they're cheap. I have a boating habbit to pay for!

Looking locally (solent) it looks a bit patchy on information, but as someone said the potential is there, do you need to pay to contribute?

No, I contributed without paying. I think I had to sign up for an account. My contribution was just naming the Pilsey anchorage and maybe a photo but I got a cheery thankyou in the mail once approved. I'll certainly contribute again if I can add anything. I found out about the app through Chasing Currents who used it all the way down to the Med so presumably it works well enough elsewhere too.

If it's patchy add in what's missing. If a pilot is patchy you can submit info and wait years to find out they ignored your mail!

The opinions/reviews are subjective (obviously) and should be treated as such. In terms of anchorages etc one doesn't know what the writer's sailing experience is.

Do you remember Neil Strenge's website 3 Point Fix? Seems to be a similar concept but presented in a very slick manner.

A rival alternative to the CA's CAptains Mate that doesn't cost you a £100+ pa for the privilege.

I have to say I prefer the unverified opinion of 100 strangers alongside their holiday pics than the "verified" opinion of a professional author who wrote some words in exchange for money. I don't necessarily doubt the words of the author, but from 100 strangers I can usually get a good picture of reality. This only works if the community grows so forgive my enthusiasm :)
