After far more than 20 years use aboard, my SSB went off air at the end of a test to reduce QRM Tones & tunners!

My Trio 140s was a good rig.She served far beyond her specification i bought her secondhand. But she went on without fault, suffered my povety and non licence renewal years of accusations of not being licenced bad SWR and broken antennas

Then my CT(Portugal) call given to me while liveing aboard and working in a now busy but then empty harbour in Lisabon i was so pissed off by the then amature Gs and worse Ms afterall its good to speak local English and worse by the mm net!

I listend to pirats & others that had lapsed calls but they were "mm freinds"you had to invite one of them for a free holiday to stay on air. They wouldent speak to REAL maratime mobiles.[--word removed--] I used to listen to calls for WX from real people sailing not just boat swapping from fixed boat to fixed boat with a TS50 when i had the WX i would break in and give it to the "pirate"But one that needed WX!!

She reduced RTTY without faults! And gave clear crisp audio QSOs She was better than many of todays new rigs notably the Yaesu 857D, 897D which i intended to be her replacement.

I was trying my NIR 12 DPS filter which i bought in 1998!It seemed to kill QRM/N but also blanked out the stations!! The test was 100% the carrier was taken out with the notch the QRM with the DYN peak! And i could still read the QRO station 5/9+20db (4db gain=1 S point)The QRN reduced to a level it wasent present(i wish id read the instuctions sooner)

For a long time the NIR 12 remained unused becouse the 12v plugs not a 12v size! And it dident seem to be effective, the 140s being such a sensitive and first class rig without need of DSP.

I asked two stations in the UK on 80m to make the test one provided a strong carrier the other a QSO after 20 seconds i pressed my PTO to thank them and my rig died! She died in service and with an SWR 1:1

I put her to rest sending her into the deep water before 43 00 0N 06 22 0E

She made her last clear transmision while in Port cros she will be missed.

Her replacement according to those useing them and my ears has to be either a Kenwood440s or Icom 706 MK2

The Icom has been prasied for years its audio outs first class and im told the front ends sensitive really great rig. The new IC7000 costing twice as much has a very bad report!

Never heard nor seen one but described by owners as "rubbish" compaired with the old 706(discontinued 706 mk2-the MK1 drifted and why i dident replace my wonderful 140s in 1988)

Today my CT calls gone. When you dont have a fixed address! Now ive gone from a carrabeian call again given to an african one where there happy to give me a call and im happy to pay!!!

My dear 140s will be saddly missed

i found a Swan 500GX 350w op BUT a valve rig Rolls royce quality no good for MM a base rig or a JRC 125 great RX 150w op and second hand for just £300 with PS to big?

If only i could find a good trio/Kenwood 440s but where? That would be a replacement for my 140s

SSBs still going since amature radio almost died licences were given now there on a "tick this box exam" its worth doing! i send my emails via RTTY. pactors now over and free download replaced at least in HB9 !!

My rig which lived aboard all my boats in good times and bad never ever let me down she went yesterday night with many good amatures on air with them conducting the test she went in a way any good rig would want on air at full power and last report 5/9 for many locations she fed a base loaded long wire loaded for 3750mhz and tuned to 14315mhz

With my now gone 140s i called the USA Sweden Australia and UK & radio caroline 100w run with a solar panel Good bye and thank you 140s forever.

Ive sent glass of wine to the depths the same wine i spilt over her in the past!Good wine from Elba! Good bye 140s good bye and thank you!

It is a bit of a disaster! It spells financal ruin for a while! No more coffee no more paid ports!!

The rig is important,it tells me what the weather might do! When i wake up it tells me whats happening beyond the cabin.

Its almosts as bad as the laptop going which through me into a year of hunger even greater povety than useual to replace an old compq with this IBM!!

The IC 718 was on my list as an almost afordable replacement but many many amatures and sailing people have told me to try to find a second hand IC 706

Its just happened!I havent looked at the second hand pages when my "old man" reaches me (thats like radcom the amature mag)ill look at once

i think i need to bone up before doing a dsc course

Got three friends using Icom 7000 and all give them a good report. But they are expensive and to my mind way too complicated. Who needs all those bells and whistles?

Have used an Alinco DX 70 on my boat and ashore for 5 years, fault free, excellent audio, cheap (half the price of the Icom new so you should be able to find a good one for £200). Only slight downside is that the filters arent really up to DX competition work.
