We all get requests to sponsor people for all kinds of pet projects, most are a nuisance but some are difficult to ignore, particularly when they come from family or friends.

A year or two ago, the son of one of my numerous nieces, whom I have never met and who has never before communicated with me, wrote asking me to sponsor him in a walk he planned to do across the Gobi Desert (or some such God-forsaken place). The idea seems to be that doing something like this makes you more attractive to potential employers. Reducing the jobless total by one seemed to me to be worth £10 so I sent him a cheque, for which he was kind enough to write and thank me.

Since then I have heard no more of it. For all I know, his bones may lie bleaching in the Gobi desert or he may have succeeded and even now be climbing the career ladder in some bean-counting office. Anyway, £10 isn't much to cough up, and some benefit may have come from it.

However, I can't see myself divvying up £10 to help JellyElly to launch her boat, or to help Captain Scott's grandson stand on the spot where his ancestor supposedly died. If I had £10 to spare I'd find it hard to decide which project is the more futile.

Talking of "stuff" when I enquired about "Greenstuff" brake pads for my trials car the manufacturer offered me 50% discount for putting a sticker on the car. I hadn't asked for it.
I wouldn't have thought anyone would be persuaded to buy them because I had them fitted. Maybe the opposite :nonchalance:

Said the chap who was banking on a further discount for his next set due to additional marketing exposure on YBW :D:D:D
