No explanation. No warnings.

I'm not fussed with some of the goings on here. I expect Graham or someone has been moaning to the mods. So what exactly was wrong with the thread?

I think it had got pointless and bad tempered.

I'd like to hear the boat has been launched, but arguing about who was being unreasonable to whom had got silly.

That's an opinion. But is it against the forum rules to drift about and discuss side issues?
On this basis most threads need closing.

If I was Ellie I'd have asked for it to be locked, a constant reminder of the pickle she'd got into by asking for sponsorship then speaking rather rashly about the marina she was in. I don't mind at all if the mods lock it because she's asked, we're a decent bunch and recognise the embarrassment. I didn't see any attacks, or nastiness toward Ellie at all, just a whole lot of sympathy and some typical forum drifting and joshing.

Trouble is , Kipper, that one personality's joshing or robust ridiculing is another's ( a more sensitive soul perhaps) hurtful dig-for example. How many differing personality types contribute to this forum d'you think..
I was unable to answer your suggestion in the locked thread re accusations of racism, bullying perceived or real but in your day job do you not feel that the more robust personal stuff should be in a dedicated place such as oooh the lounge?

And ( and!) certain contributors have broken the cardinal rule: cast dispersions on a poster, his wheels, his politics. His taste in women, his wife his whatever's but never , never his ( or her ) boat!
At least that is how I've understood it to be these past few years ...

Anyways, I am minded to bung a fiver into a BEER pot to celebrate a successful outcome to Ellie's pickle, as you so aptly put it, and I sincerely hope that a fiver so t even touch the sides for that celebratory drink as and when...

This is the road to bland, soft, lovely interactions.
You are saying that we should all operate at the level of the most fragile forumite.
Anyone that fragile will be hurt on a daily basis and you would expect them to have developed strategies to deal with it.
Like not putting themselves into the position of attracting comment which upsets them.
Ultimately, if they can't cope with the robust fun on here, it's in their own interest to either lurk or leave.
I don't think it's our position to to moderate our behaviour just in case someone has taken offence.

My point was that there was no robust stuff, it was very careful, encouraging and everyone was puzzled by Ellie's silence. I think the forum showed extraordinary restraint and showed compassion for her predicament. The accusations of bullying were utterly baffling. When someone said it was vitriolic organised bullying I just couldn't understand it. I don't know but suspect that there is a class of poster who feels they have a role to play by making out they are arbiters of moral decency; and when there is no indecent activity they have to invent it in order to fulfil their role. If there had been actual vitriolic attacks on Ellie I can't think of anyone who wouldn't have leapt to her defence; but that wasn't good enough for the "spot it and stop it" brigade, they wanted there to be attacks, so they invented them.

From the locked thread:

"On the request of the OP, this thread is being locked."

That looks good, start a thread, don't like the way it's going, get it locked... That'll save a lot of arguments

Well put, but a blanket denial of unwarranted unpleasantness ignores quite a few posters, myself included, who simply do not need to use such technique to ' argue' a point .
As I wrote earlier, a posters tone says more about them than the recipient, just as with dodgy school reports. And then there is the repetition of same, with a lorra personal slant, day in, day out.
Specific examples? I have queried three posters -who have ducked on addressing the angry tone of their ' contribution' ..
It would now take days to go back post by post, so you are probably safe in saying "oh yeah, prove it"

And of course, at the end of the day it is not my problem but it does leave an unpleasant taste

I am as tough and robust a -proven -sailor as most on here, but my goodness I am glad I didn't start telling the forum about any new boat of mine!

Well, enuff from me. Play amongst yourselves, I'm off and have managed to waste far too long on this one stalled event already!

Thank God it's gone.

It was past it's prime when folk started making things up and name calling.

Scrubbing it is an act of social philanthropy, it will prevent a number of grown ups making a further public embarrassment of themselves.

Well put Sir, if you do not mind me saying so; the thread without an active OP was rather pointless; if the OP considered her actions to have been a wee bit 'wayward' in intent or action, on consideration, then best be gone for sure:)

But best of good wishes for any future with the MFV (keep an eye on Ebay perhaps?) :)

A fair point. But google "bluejackq.com UK Forum" as Duck mentioned and two things jump out: First, the sub-30 non-oldies are a different world when it comes to aggression, quite extraordinarily so really! And secondly, JE can give as good as she gets. Have a look, feel the deja vu, and see what you think.

locking threads

I am not that ecstatic about threads being locked simply at the behest of the OP or even just one of the contributors

I do not believe that anyone owns a thread

Ellie did not own the initial monster

I have not owned any of the long threads about Centaurs and engine wells or even ones about the behaviour of a few mobo-owners

I was taken aback a little at the level of vituperation expressed by a few forumites over a plan by a bloke they have never met to buy a boat they have never sailed, changing the engine over and then sailing it to a place they have never been

but that is a good thing that lots of people are interested - it is a bad thing if it makes a few people angry - but I think some of them like to wallow in their own outrage

This forum is an amazing place - and there is no doubt my journey around the UK would have been an entirely different experience without the web in general and this forum in particular

KTL would probably have never happened - although it might have been a quick one summer wizz around the UK followed by 100,000 words in a book that sold 10,000 copies.... if I am lucky.

As a case in point. I am up in Anstruther - the forum told me it was the cheapest and nicest place to be - wonderful

today I sailed with the forumite who will be borrowing Katie L and taking her up the Forth and the Tay. I wanted to see how he handled her - and he did very well - the boat will be fine

on my way back south on Sunday I will drop the cushions and engine off in Paul's garage, go to another forumites house and take a 40 lb anchor from under a bush on his drive and then pick up an old slide scanner from a third Edinburgh location.

So in return for the use of an anchor and a scanner from the forum I am loaning it my boat - to those of you who say I am taker - well stick that in your pipe.

of course along with the blokes who make real contributions there are those who come here just to snipe and snear...

I like to think that they are generally frustrated old blokes who do not do as much sailing as they need to keep them sweet tempered.

The anger will only get more extreme on these forums as we get older and more of us become prone to dementia in its various forms.

So along with the doom laden anger merchants who post nothing but billious laden prose you also get those who can always be relied upon to come up with a novel, intelligent or witty suggestion.

So even if a thread turns sour with the outpourings of too many crazy old blokes I think that threads should still be left to run their proper course.
