Hm, impressively quick upgrade from the tree!

no broom but i have got a sweping brush AND a vacuum cleaner.

How much did you get for the tree in part-ex? Or is the Broom made of the tree?

mooring in the med

i have to say, it ain't easy....

My tip wd be to

1) buy the Livre de Bord almanac, loads better than reeds or ££loony cumberlidge etc out of date hardback pilot books with crap ole pix and LdB has up to date phone numbers with lots of english stuff too.

2) make sure you are on south side of majorca fro protection from winds and look carefully before crossing -ask around and ring ahead to bals for forecast - perhaps a broom or at least brit dealer - they are usually either helpful or v helpful. The east is a bit empty, but some interestingish marinas, tho these are exposed. Get a sailing brocjure and they always say how Maj has excellenet wind for sailing - but the mobo adverts never mention it.

3) try booking some ports way in advance - weeks or months ahead. I have already booked some med ports for weekend jaunts. You may need to fax them for this from home. It needn;t spoil iit having it a bit planned, really.

4) Quite nice ports in maj are Porto Olimpico (? the old one anyway) in Palma, and even better is Arenal but further out of town - cos both have nice pools and yot clubs free to visitors and v nice for families a touch sick of boats. If there 2 weeks I wd book 2-3 nites in arenal after 3 nites in the central port olymipico. You can still nip out for a jaunt on boat and come back. Cheaper place is club de mar to leave it there - praps get swmbo to call/book and jump queues cos eveyone is v sexist so poor little woman on her own in boat etc etc

The rest are so-so apart from Portals which is lottery winnerish, nice restaurants but they tell you to naff off cos the waiting list is massive.

5) it will spoil thing if you don't ever stay on the hook: it's much cooler in open space with a biit of air movement instead of in the sweaty marina. There are only berths for 70% of the summertime craf, they sayt. I keep recommending Es trenc - blue water anchorage in sand near rapita on the SE tip of majorca. Best is to anchor early in the day on no less than 5x chain, nice swim, lunch on beach, more swim, snooze...and perhaps occassionally family snorkel to look at the anchor each time...drop stones near it to give a marker...and then realise it really isn't gonna move. Note that an afternoon sea breeze drives lots in the marinas but by 7pm it is v often flat flat calm. I wd still nip into a marina for bit of fuel and water and forecast next morning tho...

6) menorca is ok, but bit more broken than majorca. Quite a hack really, nice enuf, but not an absolute must and eats soem holiday up.

7) the food is a bit rubbish almost eveywhere in spain, but not quite everwhere, so it's worth looking, unlike in the US where things like garlic aren't allowed.

8) if at anchor then dinhy to beach, keep your boat in sight near popular beaches. A friend in formentera had his boat "rescued" by others who claimed salvage although they actually found it upwind, somehow, and then "agreed" to settle for £2000 - but he stuck out, called police and eventually got his boat back. Only a one-off but worth being careful.

9) spanish safety etc is all called up by mobile phone. I tried ch16, no flippin answer, nothing. Get the numbers from a marina.

I reckon we will leave south of france with about 5 weeks cruising what do you reccommend for that sort of period we will have to get back to france to have the boat lifted back so we can do some more English freezing cold winter cruising dont you luv it

Very nice, Sami. As an ex Broom owner, I'm a big fan of the marque. You're going to get some crap from other forumites about net curtains, pipes 'n slippers and driving a Rover but just ignore it
Interested to hear how you get on the Med. There are very few Brooms out there, the received wisdom being that aft cabin boats are not suited to the Med, something I've never really understood. I do think that Brooms dont have enough exterior loafing space for warmer climes though
Have you got a passarelle fitted 'coz you're going to need one as virtually all Med marinas have stern-to moorings. Regarding anchoring overnight, you're going to need at least 50m of chain and it might be worth talking to Broom as to whether you can fit a larger anchor just to be on the safe side. Your plotter may have an anchor watch alarm but you're unlikely to hear it asleep in the aft cabin so its of limited use

broom and net curtains

yes, i agree, it's only a few who spolil things and cruelly rip into broom owners about the so-called fuddy duddy floating 1960's caravan image, and making sterotypical remarks about probably having shortbread biscuits with doilies on board, cups of tea with saucers, thermos flasks, the owner wearing peaked caps which say "captain" on them, wearing blazers whilst underway and cardigans in the evenings, Captain Mainwaring jibes, the tendency towards rivers and dundee cake, the average age of the owners being well over 60, quirky crew who actually like being directed around the colour-coded mooring lines, the main saloon often being decked out with the contents of Nauticalia and as Deleted User says, these fools should be ignored completely. In fact, i'm rather pleased that there's pretty much nobody around here who'd say any of those things, really.

Sami, nice pic. Agree all the other comments.

I'll pick you up a livre de bord if you want and post it. About £20. I'm in France this weekend but not sure about shop opening hours easter weekend. But I'll be there the following wekeend anyway.

As mentioned you need a passerelle. You might then need to rework the tender/snap davit arrangement, looking at your pic. You mentioned central heating, but is it reverse cycle aircon? You will find trying to sleep on a non-airconned boat unbearable in summer. And then you need a genset to run the aircon. Heck, passerelle, air, gen is about £20k, which I dont think this thread was meant to cost.....

The last time we cruised aorund Majorca was 1999, in August, in 42 footer. I was expecting marinas all to be full but actually we got places ok, to my surprise, provided we turned up at about lunchtime. The far east coast was ok we thought, esp formentor etc, and marina space was easier to get in Alcudia and Pollensa than the places nearer Palma

You wont get a marina place in Ibiza or Formentera in August but Menorca is supposed to be less crowded. The accepted procedure in Ibiza is to get on the phone in the morning as soon as the marina staff get in, they will put you on a waiting list for a mooring that night and, supposedly, phone you back at 17.00 to give you the good/bad news which they never do. You then ring them at 17.30 and they say they've never heard of you and, no, they have'nt got a place for that night anyway
Agree that it might work pitching up at lunchtime but who wants to spend the afternoon cooped up in a stuffy marina rather than anchored in a nice bay. In any case, the marina staff bugger off usually between 13.00 and 16.00
tcm's tactic of arriving late and parking on the fuel berth can work but usually some 20 footer saily boat has got there first and parked in such a way as to not allow any other boat to moor there. Anyway, you get chucked off at 08.00 which is a bit previous when you're on hols
I'm not a great fan of Med marinas

Re: Jeez - the wired society

No one was/or is O/B the Broom and I was just extending the hand of friendship......

i am a bit pissed off actually as the braodband here which is the same I use at home marina is mucho faster here and excellent signal strength.

I have been putting up with duff service of a year as I knew no better. This will change after the holiday!!

I think you will miss whole lumps of all the islands if you dont anchor, I would also say its not going to be easy for a boat of your size of which there are thousands in the Ballearics to find a berth, book ahead if you can and hunt around. Sorry but its not easy in season.
