Yesterday. When he bought it he was told it was a 1997 engine. He has now been told that it is probably much older. Does anyone know where he can get a definitive age using the serial number???

Make? Size? Colour? (livery sometimes gives a clue to age) HP?, and as You say serial No.?
All these ,if not Some , at least, would help .

An eng of that age or Older as You mention, needs as much info as poss to identify
Just the serial No.s on their own twould be difficult to pin point the begger!

Thanks for the replies.
He looked at a plate on the motor which does not seem to have letter to coincide with the model year as per that site.
The engine is a Yamaha 60 Autolube, Feo. It is blue with red and white stripes. Engine number 6h2 or gh2-- L 406186
