moving to the south of england

We firstly moved our boat to the SofF, then bought a place and are now (in 15ish) years planning on retiring to the SofF. Weather and boating are certainly very strong points on why we want to move there.

Hey Seastoke
Living in the North West and having boated out of Pwllheli for the last 25 years we stumbled across Weymouth 3 years ago when we bought our current boat
there, subsequently moved it back to Wales but moved it back down to Weymouth after a few months as we wanted to stretch our sea legs further south and explore new places. The weather has been consistently better by at least 3 degrees, but more noticabley when comparing with pals in Wales far less rain and much more sunlight. Weymouth is a little out of the way for some but we found the locals and marina staff to be great, and your not paying Solent or Dartmouth/Torquay prices, be it for berthing or if also wanting bricks and mortar .
In the last 18 months we have crossed the channel a good number of times to explore Channel Islands and France , and as of September have relocated the boat to Jersey, which puts us right in the centre of some fantastic cruising grounds, the added bonus being the duty free fuel. We now commute out of Liverpool with Easyjet, 4 hours from home to the boat.
Good luck with your new adventure, a change often gives renewed enthusiasm for this great pastime.
Cheers
Tetleys

Word of advice.....

No.1. The Conwy version of Beaufort scale has no need for anything below F6, it has all therefore been deleted .:):):)

No 2. The only restuarant not closed before 7 pm is the Indian, which if your lucky might be open until 9.00PM...... . :):):).

Ah, this is true but of very little consequence as the pubs are all open till late :encouragement:

We called into east Cowes around seven years ago ,comming back from the channel Isles, for a lift and repair, at the local boat yard, as it was about a third of the cost of a lift on the mainland, with the intention of heading home to the east coast, we still have not made it back yet,:), the Solent can get busy ,as there are lots of places to visit within a short distance , we don't tend to boat much in the Solent ,but use our base in east Cowes as a starting point, as been mentioned if you are willing to stretch your legs ,there are some fantastic areas to explore , we use our boat all year round , only carry out minimal winterisation , moorings are more competitive ,but you have to factor in the ferry, we found that there were few marinas on the main land that could match our local settings when not using the boat, apart from Lymington but that is a lot more expensive ,further for us to drive and at one end of the Solent , we like Weymouth but it's a bit isolated, Dartmouth is another favourite but to far for us to commute as we live Cambridgeshire , makes visiting them all the more worthwhile .

Kwackers I think Roy may be getting lonely, you should make yourself more at home on his boat more often. Bring your students. They can practise pontoon bashing alongside while you relax with a cuppa and pud.

Probably the best Post/Idea from you in 2018
Mrs Seastoke does THE BEST bacon etc sarnies this side of the Orinoco!

to be honest we where thinking not the solent ,we moored our boat in Cristchurch, for one season and liked the area ,is this the solent still???? ,then 4 yrs in Dartmouth so we know a few places dayne saff, but we are still interested if peeps have moved boat and house ,well new house ,lol

I would say Christchurch is a lovely place but not so good for boating due to the shallow channel in especially in winter months. Several of my mates have smaller boats there and at times struggle getting out and in, can also be costly in prop repairs should you get it wrong

There are plenty of shaft drive boats at Elkins and Rosditers but they harbour is restricted.
You could get a deal in Yarmouth.

We moved from 'Up North to Torquay' 7 years ago, the main reason was because my Mrs family are all down here.
I was a little unsure at first, but didn't take long to get into the easier way of life, warmer and drier climate, and fantastic boating right on my doorstep!

It's a bit of a hike when I go back to visit my family in Yorkshire, but in all fairness wild horses would not drag me away now!

Bruce if I go I will leave one of my fridges behind with beer in it ,and vics will have to learn how to do butties as good as Val, for when kwakers visits u on a weekly basis

Didnt you read about all the prop strikes? Buddy, do I have to remind you how that was a headache for you? Can you navigate yet without Val, Ive seen you wander up the North Channel more than once

We have kept Eos on the Dart for about 9years now. I have a trot mooring. That has up sides and downsides. The positives are the price, about £1800 for the year for a 48’ boat, the location, fabulous 360 views, and security. The downsides are getting back onto the mooring can be quite a faff, especially in strong winds and tides, and for many, I guess the lack of walk ashore and power and water can be a problem. However we have very large water tanks and solar panels keep the batteries in tip top condition.

I love it there and will be reluctant to give it up. If you want to move the boat to Dartmouth there are 3 marinas to choose from, although they are all quite expensive, or you can put your name down for a Dart Nav berth, either a trot mooring or an island pontoon berth, which does have power and water. The waiting lists can be long, although if you’re prepared to move about, Dart Nav can sometimes find you a temporary berth for a year at a time. It’s certainly worth asking about if you want to make the move.

We live just outside Exeter and it about a 40 minute drive down to Kingswear, where you can either park in the marina car park, or slightly less convenient, find an on road space further away. Living in Devon is great, there’s nowhere else I’d rather be in the UK.

Ahah, have just re read your post, seem you already know Dartmouth! Oh well, there’s always the Exe!
