Anyone else hear the automated weather message from Solent CG on Ch16 today that overspoke a Mayday?

Feels like they should listen on 16 for 30 seconds and cancel any automated routine transmissions as required.

Automated weather message? Is that announcing a maritime safety information broadcast?

Is it possible you could hear the mayday but the CG mast could not?

I would assume that regardless of mayday or not that the CG listen before transmitting - and if transmissions are automated there would be automated “listen before transmitting”.

Yes, No, Me too. :)

So are the pre-announcements of MSIB in the Solent done automatically? Is this new? Are your broadcasts themselves (on the other channels) also automated?

These are the kinds of questions I was hoping this thread would answer.

Well certainly last season Belfast and Stornaway were human beings: local accents, occasional stumble of words, even release the PTT mid word,

I think it's relatively new but there are several CG stations, including Solent, using computer-generated voices for info' broadcasts. Normally quite easy to tell because the pronunciation of place names is often wrong along with odd nuances of pitch.

I don't like it at all. Perhaps I'm a dinosaur, but I much prefer knowing it's a human speaking to me - especially in bad weather. I find it strangely comforting.

I don't mind the weather forecast being a computer voice, just as long as it's a real human with a brain who answers my mayday.

"In the interest of saving money, we have outsourced Coastguard emergency services to India"...

Aviation met broadcasts have been automated for years and whilst airports have the option of having a local record the words needed so the computer can stitch them together for each broadcast, few seem to. But with swinging public service cost cutting we bemoan both a drop in service and taxation hikes.

But quite frankly I think we as humans prefer to communicate with humans (or dogs, I suppose and occasionally cats) I do wonder if this rush to technology actually goes against our instincts as human beings.

I'm not very worried about hearing an automated voice, but I am worried about what it implies about their capacity. If they can't spare someone to spend a few minutes reading a script on the radio, how are they going to surge to meet the needs of an emergency?
