Most expensive Marina

Just got back from a week on the boat. Spent one night in a particular marina - and the fee was the most I have ever paid.

Can you guess which marina it was?

Clue - UK South Coast.

Don't go to Italy. E250+ per night the norm when I was there a couple of weeks ago. Water on the meter and electricity extra........

(I wasn't footing the bill, I did think the south coast was expensive till i went there)

I paid £50 per night at Porto Cervo for a 31' boat - 22 years ago!

Quite large but not a ship - 19m. I was delivering it, thus not me paying.

Indeed - there are many med marina facilities that make even Salterns look reasonable. We asked about putting into Fethie a day early on a bb charter in 1998 and they wanted £95 (16m yacht) - so we sailed back out to a restaurant with a jetty and had a whole spit roast lamb and wine etc for about the same money Sadly the latter is rarely an option here, but the buoys at the Banks Arms and in Swanage are the equivalent.

How does that compare with charges in other countries, the Med, USA, Scandanavia?

The lowest in Germany (Baltic and North Sea) and Northern Netherlands this summer was 8.55 Euros in Wangerooge for a 9.4m yacht. The highest was about 20 Euros (Den Helder). Most rates seemed to be about 12 Euros for a <10m yacht. Most places had free power and water, although a few charged for showers.

I think you find extortionate pricing everywhere, we paid over 60 euros a night in Arcahon, though the second night was free, and the facilities were ****. Here in Portugal they say Cascais is very opricey, and the daily rate in Lagos in summer is pretty high too.

£44 for one night for my little 24.5 footer

I believe the reason why Salterns is so expensive is because, even at their stupendous prices, it's a lot cheaper to buy a boat, and moor it there, than it is to buy a house in Sandbanks, overlooking the Harbour.....

We paid £24 per night in Northney.. facilities were ok.. not alot else to say about the place.

Whereas we paid £16 per night in Port Solent and the Facilities were excellent.. (inc electric)

There seems to be no rationale to marina pricing, simply what they can get away with!

I live in on the west coast Sweden and the most expensive we've had was about £28 for our 34ft yacht that was on the border with Norway in a place called Strömstad without electricity...

the one that always saddens me most is poole haven (or whatever they have called their "new" marina on the quay) used to be reasonable price and good fun on the quay but the price they charge for berthing overnight at their new facility is the most expensive we have ever paid - did raise this with them by email and their justification was that they had compared their price to other soutth coast marinas and theirs - they claimed was comparable - might be true if you ignore the harbour dues which are either included or none existent in other places in central south coast and which - strange that - are paid to the same poole harbour commisioners as the owners and operators of aforesaid marina - they have done a great job of putting us off visiting poole quay

I used to love rafting out from the Town Quay then they stopped it and 'made' us go to the new marina. After the first night we made a grumpy exit West saying we would never pay their prices again only to return cap in hand after failing to make it... I have never been back since, we just keep going. It is a shame because I did like Poole.

There is still rafting on the quay most of the time - it's only rarely that they have 'something in' and occupying the space.

I once had a berth for the summer at the Boston Yacht Haven. Visitors berths for under 35 feet were then $3 per foot. Now they're $3.60.

In contrast, in 2007 we went to the Baltic, and some nights were free, especially in Sweden in september, when it seemed the season was over. When we did pay, for example in Denmark, the cost for less than 10m was often about a tenner sterling (though exchange rates are worse now). In Finland, the lowest was EUR2 in an honesty box, and often only about EUR10.
