Can anyone recommend Morocco and Algeria as a cruising ground for a few weeks or longer. Is there a good pilot book that covers that cruising area. All thoughts welcome.

I have recently (in november) cruised the Atlantic Coast of Morocco and can heartily recommend it. But be prepared to deal with some burocracy and it is easier if you speak some french. The country is wonderfull and the people are very friendly, but yachting is quite unusual there, esp. in the south. The only good pilot book is Imrays "North Africa Pilot" and the info on noonsite. If you want more infos, mail me.

I have cruised nearly all Med Morocco and its a very good experience - there is a Spanish enclave (as well as Ceuta) half way along the coast which is good value and fun. The beaurocracy is mindblowing - as time consuming as anywhere but if you treat it as fun - watch your (financial back) and remember that 'backsheesh' is an ingrained part of the system - the job entitles the worker to receive these payments - you will have a good time.

I never went to Algeria as I considered the risks to great for it to be enjoyable but had some of the best and nicest cruising in the Med in Tunisia - much more user friendly than Morocco.

My only experience of morocco is Smir marina, has a website www.portmarinasmir.com quite a nice place but the quay side bar was a bit expensive, they accept euros though and are very freindly people. Good pilot book of the area is straits sailing although more associated with ports on the european side.

I don't know about Morocco, but strongly recommend NOT to appoach the algerian coast.
I lived several years in Algeria years ago (between 1972 and 1990), and even had my boat there.
The political situation has changed drastically, and the country has to be considered as very dangerous for europeans now.
The coast itself is magnificent, but there are no harbours, nor marinas, nor infrastructure neither for sailboats, nor for tourism.
There was (still is?) a small marina at Sidi Ferruch some 15 nm west from Algiers, but I was said that it is completely blocked by sand now.
Again, my only recommendation : avoid Algeria!
Why not a stop on the Balearics on the way from Morocco to Tunesia?
